11068147 No.11068147 [Reply] [Original]

So I just saw this video on Youtube and it said steakhouses are dying because of things like rising cost of beef due to droughts, the fact they don't use USDA choice meat, the fake kobe beef scandal, animal welfare and the fact people look at steaks as if they were strip clubs.

I was curious what you think? Personally I would only go to a steakhouse on a date or a special occasion with a good friend or friends. Not ever by myself. I like cooking at home. If I eat out by myself it's fast food. Steakhouses are too expensive and you have to pay for a tip. The last time I bought steak was a sale on Memorial day 2017 at Albertsons: a 4 pack for 24 bucks or 6 bucks a steak. I usually make 4 burgers from a $3 chub of ground beef from target or walmart. I like cooking to save money. I think it's simply the internet and now more then ever people have the knowledge and ability to cook at home. In addition we live in a country where we were raised on dollar menu deals or $5 footlong and so we are subconsciously trained to save money on food.

What do YOU people think about Mashed's opinions and mine? What do you think is the reason steakhouses are dying?

Millennials avoid most restaurants because of their crippling social anxiety. If it doesn't have a drive-thru they won't eat there. The idea of interacting with waiters and nice, formal, dining triggers them because it's far outside their comfort zone. They'd rather facecram junk food while gaming.

>> No.11068244 [DELETED]

I think part of the reason is that steakhouses used to be one of the only places you could get a quality cut of meat and have it cooked well. Now its easy to get a good steak at the super market and people are more willing to cook it themselves.

Also people between 20-30 are more interested in all of the new/trendy stuff. What group of 25 year old kids wants to go sit down for a steak and a baked potato? I personally prefer going to steak places now because its away from yelpers doing selfies in front of their bubble teas and pho ramen bowls.

German restaurants are facing a similar fate... its seen as old fashioned.

I would have expected that to just be some dumb clickbait (which you ironically didn't post the link to, despite putting the YT title right in the OP pic), but I think they're pretty much spot on.

One of the things that pisses me off on /ck/ is that anon who comes into any restaurant/industry thread and says they could do it just as good at home for much cheaper, but with steak I actually agree. While the cost of beef is definitely a big factor (all restaurants live or die on a tiny cost margin - other than breakfast places; breakfast places have the best food costs of any type of restaurant, and there are always old people who can't taste anything anymore or cook for themselves), I think the peta shit is a minor factor. It's more that steakhouses haven't really done anything new, pretty much ever, and people who didn't grow up during the depression, or have parents or grandparents that experienced it, don't view a hunk of meat as a luxury item anymore. I cook for a living, and can make a good steak at home, but I'm not saying it's going to be as good as a place that ages their own beef and has a 1400 degree broiler (and yeah, anyone who fell for the kobe scam is just a sucker). And the strip club analogy is pretty good, as you have to pay for every little thing, and it seems overpriced (and is), but you keep being reassured that it's worth it and you're getting something amazing. I could go on but I'm drunk, and now want to think about my next sous vide project.

it's really a perfect storm of why the FUCK would you choose a steakhouse of all places. Steak is universally loved in North America. it's not like settling on a chain because no one can make up your mind. you're making a conscious decision, among a group of people, to shell out minimum 100$ each between drinks, meal, and tip. You can pick up a tray at home and a decent 40 of whiskey for less. >Millennials avoid most restaurants because of their crippling social anxiety.

No actually I don't enjoy talking to people that are coerced into being friendly with me by monetary incentives. Only boomers were self-deluded enough to think the waiter really thought that their jokes were funny.

I have a tendency to get sick of food I've eaten more than four or five times. After that, I don't crave it anymore and want to eat something else. But any red meat that is juicy enough that it is literally dripping with fat is something I can eat pretty much forever. I think fat is the one thing people always crave no matter much or how often they eat it. As such, I'd be surprised if steakhouses went out of business entirely, because your average burger is dry as fuck. Someone will always want a good quality steak with a lot of marbling. And as people in this thread keep saying, people are too lazy to go out and eat. Well, if people are so lazy, perhaps some of them are too lazy to cook for themselves and would rather spend money for the convenience. We will see how it plays out.

The reason is that they're a relic of the past and conjure an image of goofy ass white people sitting around with their goofy ass white dad acting like a fake ass nuclear family.
"steak" is an implicitly white thing and nobody wants to associate with cowboys or ranchers if theyre not white. Considering white people are declining as a population and America is becoming more gloriously diverse, white food like steak and potatoes are being phased out, much like white people are.
The second and even better reason is people aren't as interested in eating meat as they were before when fat white people were the majority. People see that meat is cruel and unhealthy and so things like sushi and vegetarian heavy diets are more en vogue. Also some of the things people said in this thread particularly how easy it is to make a 'steak house' quality steak at home thanks to youtube.
In short, steak houses are for old relic white people and nobody wants to go sit in a restaurant decorated like a log cabin to have a steak when they don't have any cultural connection to it.

I would add, the worst advertisement for steak is the fat white pasty people that eat it. Why would you eat that much food? Nobody wants to look like that and people are very self conscious now because of social media. So the thought of eating a huge steak and a bunch of potatoes and butter seems counterintuitive for that selfie you wanna post later. People prefer to eat light healthy food like lettuce and tomatoes, not eat the food that made white people decadent and slovenly enough to become such weak and impotent cucks that they basically gave their country away without a fight. lmao.
steak=cuck food

For the faggots that will reply by saying i'm looking too deep into it, shove it up your ass.

food =culture and culture is politics. Same reason people in Los Angeles (white people) oppose taco trucks, because its a signal that the times are changing and their burger joint is no longer the hip place to be.

You have points, but mostly you present that you have an ethnic and diet lifestyle axe to grind. The affluence and demographic declines are right, the big beef trope is anglo and people stopped assimilating into wasp culture around that time.

I love going out to eat. I love the entire expierence and spend money on it when I really cant afford it.
That being said, I hate steak houses. Steak houses sometimes serve low quality steak. I enjoy grilling a steak and I enjoy drinking as much beer or wine for cheap with my steak. Steak houses are fucking loud and sometimes smokey and 9/10 their sides are shit.

Steak houses suck. The sushi industry isn't dying out in america, because sushi places tend to be either okay quality or americans just dont know enough about sushi to say otherwise. And a night of sushi is far more expensive than a night at a steak house.

Ironically as a half white mutt, something like steak and potatoes were rare. Especially because we didn't have the most money, so steak was super rare. So getting something like that hits both nostalgia and "rare food" treat.
But yes if I want to treat myself I go to my local sushi place. It's not the best I've had, but I can get a roll, appetizer, and drink for about ten bucks. Maybe I'd spend 20-25 if I really wanted to make it special and get the more expensive rolls or apps. Or spend about that much to get the base amount at the higher end place. I can even get really good Indian for 15-20. Etcetc
As opposed to the 25 base starting cost of just stepping inside a steakhouse or anywhere that appeals to "white boomer food" taste. And if I want something flavorful or not the cheapest option it's more like 30-40. As much as I'd love to just be able to occasionally go to steak houses and other things millenials are killing, they're just too expensive.
Which reminds me, it's not only white food that needs to relax with pricing. There's a taqueria here and I don't know if they hand make their tortillas but it being so expensive at iirc ~3 per taco with low cost meat like offal and across from a taco bell, I haven't gone more than once.
