Most of this shit is dollar-store-tier food.
So I'd like the convenience if they weren't approx $10-20 a pop.

If you're into prepping, consider getting a vacuum sealer and making your own """mre"""

Like this. A lot of this stuff is a bit of trouble to make but as long as you can boil water you should be able to eat everything in it. Besides you could always pack some esbit in there like they do in European MRE's

isn't the whole point of a MRE supposed to be meal ready to eat? the rice sides and roasted garlic requires a bit of water the ramen and spam you can eat straight up

Even American MRE's require water. But like I said you could pack some esbit in there to boil water for food. A lot of non American MRE's also require you to have boiled water on hand to eat them

gee, another steve thread in thin disguise

They are WAY overpriced unless uncle sam is giving them to you, and taste meh, at best.

I used to have a few cases kept jic, but switched to freeze dried for my emergency stash.

Only had an mre once, it wasn't very good. My friend's dad was in the military and he told us we were eating his old stock one day.

If you go to the grocery store and look in the pasta aisle, you'll see lots of ready made food in retort pouches like this.

Rumor has it that these were originally designed to be put into military MRE's, but at the last minute they decided that they weren't up to standard, because the military wants a guaranteed expiration date of up to 3 years or something. So the manufacturers had to hurry up and repurpose them for civilian use.

Either way, they would probably be useful for a BOB or emergency stash. See also uncle bens ready rice and hormel compleats

but you miss 2/3 of the fun of an MRE, having all the accessories like TP and a tiny tabasco bottle (or do they all use tabasco packets now?)

>> No.11073706

>>11073685
Well the idea is that you're doing this to save money.
Buy a shit ton of plastic silverware.
Or steal a shit ton of sporks and sauce from taco bell. Whatever.
Then vacuum seal it in a bag with the food.
You can make your own personal meal kits with whatever you like in them, and you're doing it for $4-$5 a meal instead of around $12 for some milsurp shit.

Side note: if you don't have a means to consistently and easily boil water, you need to figure one out now. You can't just depend on alex jones filters

Emergency stash should be dry rice, dry beans, cooking oil, and vitamins. Most bang for your bck and space. If you're bugging out there's an argument for meals you don't have to cook/prep for.

>If you're bugging out there's an argument for meals you don't have to cook/prep for.

Ultimately you should be bugging out to a place loaded with can and dry goods. If it takes you more than 3 days on bicycle to get to your bug out location you have a problem and 3 days worth of food is nothing.

So what is the value of an MRE to a prepper? You can't live on them long term and there are cheaper healthier meals you can live on a lot longer. So really the only value to an MRE is long shelf life, so you can add a box or two to your stock just for food variety of your preps.

Short term: pouches of rice, tuna, noodles, like Knorr or starkist win out. If you don't have two cups of water and the ability to boil them, then you are not prepared.
