So I’m going to New York in a month and I’m not sure what I should try. Any recommendations? I’ve heard about Katz’ Deli but I’m not sure if that’ll be a tourist trap.

I’m visiting friends for a day or two in Philadelphia on the same trip, so if there’s anything worthwhile eating there it would be great to know beforehand

any place that people will list here will be a tourist trap
any restaurant listed on a website's top list will be a tourist trap
you're going to the biggest city in the fucking country...go on yelp when you're in the area, search a category that you're hungry for, and make a decision based on the pictures of the food (not the reviews)
fuck you for asking this garbage

Well fuck me for asking a question on a food forum right? Sorry it’s not death row last meals for the 90th time this year

I’ve never been to the USA so I’m asking for personal opinions on what people think is the most worthwhile foot to grab whilst I’m there.

If you’re not interested in contributing then why even post?

A couple MRE's at the army surplus store where you can also get your obligatory body armor. Good luck, stay safe and bon appetite!

Honestly just look at yelp for the neighborhoods you're in. It's not so much new york specific food, it's just new york will have good everything. If you want a good sushi/chinese/italian/french/etc. place, chances are new york will have it. As far as new york specific food, grab a good new york slice. Get an everything bagel with cream cheese.
PS: Xi'an's famous is nice and fairly cheap

This. Katz is indeed good, and it's a craft food that really does have to be done right. There are good this or that in every neighborhood though. There's little reason to go to the original location for x food, if you are close to a good competitor. Any of the top 10 kosher delis will have amazing bread, cheesecake, pickles, chopped liver, latkes, and yes, pastrami. If they didn't, they'd be history years ago.

Depending where you are from in the world, you might be jonesing bad for Asian food, for BBQ, for prime steak, or whatever you can't easily get at home. For Americans, I think we all get good pizza pretty easily in most major cities, and it and hot dogs are one of the things in NY that are hit or miss in quality and enjoyment. For myself, I get great hispanic food where I live, but very little good asian food where I live, so in NYC I'm in heaven to get bibimap, korean chicken wings, bahn mi, and as much isreali food as I can hunt down. I die for a good falafel. Great french style bakeries are also something I seek out. For you? I could be top rated donuts or those cupcakes or burgers you saw on TV, like celebrity chef stuff. Manhattan is a food wonderland esp when not a chain. Seek out what you want.

An everything bagel with capers, cream cheese, and lox is the one Jewish food I'd actually recommend to other people. Generally speaking, they're going to be good any place that's got a high density of hand-wringing chosen people. I.e., most of Manhattan.

As for Philadelphia I couldn't recommend the Reading terminal market any higher, open late with dozens of class stands for whatever you're interested in. Blackened chicken fettuccini or cheesesteak whiz whit are my go to when I'm shellacked downtown.
.
New York city has only trash, shit hot dogs with mustard, and raging bumlords. A soul ducking loneliness encompasses the eyes of all its miserable inhabitants.

Don't worry about that grumpy anon, though he IS mostly correct. Most of the shit you read to be "the best" is paid advertising and/or bias from people who only eat off those lists. The best thing to do is to just ask somebody on the street where they like to eat.

I lived in Philly for a greater part of my life so I can recommend some places there

>Cheesesteaks

While the roast pork sandwich is superior, im sure as a tourist you're gonna want a cheesesteak. Tony Luke's, Jims on South St, and Dalessandros are the only places worth your time. Don't even fucking think about going to Pat's or Geno's. They're steakums garbage.

>Roast pork

This is actually the crowning achievement of Philly. Slow roasted suckling pig, provolone, broccoli rabe, on a roll you can only get fresh in the city. Paesanos, DiNics, and John's are where to go.

Other than that just Yelp places. You could get a Philly pretzel if you want, maybe try to find a place that sells tomato pies. There's good brewery's around, Tired Hands is a bit out of the city but prolly the best in the state. There's an illegal down in South Philly who owns a place called Barbacoa which is top tier Mexican food. Franklin fountain has awesome old school ice cream. Bars: Dirty Frank's, Trestle inn, Johny Brenda's, Frankford hall, tattood mom are some I can think of off hand.

Enjoy yourself Anon. It's a fun town. And don't be intimidated if someone starts heckling you. That's just the culture, everyone's actually super friendly even if they seem like they're breaking your balls.

Katz's is a major tourist trap, Sarge's in murray hill is true new york deli pastrami. Katz's is rubbery, hand cut, and you'll get a migraine just trying to get your sandwich especially if you're spergy. Food critics were shitting on Katz's deli as far back as the sixties and for twenty years they've just been trading on having cool, old school signage in a city with a rapidly decaying identity. Also Anthony Bourdain waxed poetic about it a few times, but considering he was a hack fraud who unceremoniously hung himself with a terrycloth bathrobe belt because he was a hack fraud I think we should retire the use of his opinions as our own.

Oh yeah also OP for whatever reason Katz's has a rep as being a late night haunt but it closes early by NYC standards. Sarge's is 24 hrs and comfy as all get out, and by comparison Katz's has fucking bouncers to fend off the drunks. Also the other stuff on the menu like the fries, the kreplach, etc. run laps around Katz's. Sorry for going off I just really hate that so many out of towners associate Katz's with good pastrami and I'm glad you're at least questioning that.

At the end of the day their pastrami is good, though. So is the roast beef. Even the fucking hot dog is good.

Except it's not good, it's rubbery and soggy and unctuous. NY Times called it inedible in a review, and New York Magazine ranked it DEAD LAST in their 1973 pastrami olympics pic related. Katz's has sucked since my Grandparents were eating pastrami in NYC.

"Katz's, 205 East Houston Street, at Ludlow Street, on the Lower East Side, may be an acceptable stopover for an impulse hot dog obscured with mustard and sauerkraut, but it's no place to find quality corned beef and pastrami, even though all meats here are hand‐sliced. The sandwiches, which cost $2.60 each, were tough, rubbery and barely edible. The meat weighed 5½ ounces." -NY Times

You're wrong. Real New Yorkers always had a better deli to go to than Katz's, which is only still in business because they bought the building they're in. Other delis failed to do this and went out of business. So now Katz's is one of the last standing. It became one of the best by attrition.
