Gros Michel and other variants are too susceptible to blight and diseases to be mass produced on a large scale plantation.

They literally only genetically engineered cavendish to be resistant to most strains of fungus and blight.

I heard before the year 1920, the Gros Michel was actually the most common type of banana, and that it tastes exactly like what we consider """artificial banana flavoring""".
