I've started drinking some wheat beers because they don't have the bitterness/sharpness of lagers which put me off beers for the longest time.

Someone mentioned in one of these threads (or it might have been a friend) that they effect you way quicker than regular beer and I've just finished my fourth pint and it's really starting to hit me now. I'm not much of a drinker obviously (was hard to be with regular lager making me want to spew just from the taste) but even if I could force myself to drink 4 regular pints it wouldn't have effected me as much as 3 or 4 wheat beers have.

Is there any science behind the different kinds of beer (with same alc%) effecting you differently? I was 3 beers in and struggling to follow (or at least pay attention) to a TV series I'm watching so it's pretty substantial.

Probably the correct answer actually, I can sit and stew on a pint of regular lager for an hour or two, I've been drinking these in 3 or 4 mouthfuls because they don't taste horrendous.

I tried a Hoegaarden which I was looking forward to and it was probably the worst of the wheat beers I've tried, others being Franscikaner and Patronus, but I've been drinking them pretty quickly compared to how I'd drink a regular beer (I guess if it takes me 1 or 2 hours to drink a regular pint I've basically had the alcohol flush through my system by the time the next pint starts to be consumed so it never really hits me)

Coriander and orange peel is actually what I was looking forward to with Hoegaarden, but I couldn't taste either, it actually tasted more like regular lager than the other two I described (Franzikaner/Patronus) with that bitterness in the aftertaste.

I still need to try and source some Blue Moon but I don't have high hopes after being kind of let down with Hoegaarden. I guess I need to be much more familiar with the taste of wheatbeer itself before I can even start to taste any of the undertones let alone appreciate them properly.

B) we are talking about beer from a brewery, with actual canning/bottling facilities not shit you cooked on your stove and racked into dirty bottles with loose caps. It can last a few days of transit just like it can last from the brewery to distribution. I'm guessing you haven't had a single day IPA or anything which you could notice a change from but I can assure you that I can, have and am able to get the east coasts finest here to the mitten in time that it's not degraded.

C) you still dont know how beer spoilage works, or that if it was in unpressurized cargo hold at 30k feet it would explode, so I'm guessing you are too stupid to realize how wrong you are to talk about shit you have no experience with.

You seem to have inferred that I live on the West Coast, so why on Earth would you think that I can't get PtY? I basically live in the sticks, but there are 3 places that get a keg or two within half an hour of me. You seem bitter (pun intended).

Any recommendations for belgians St. Bernardus and Chimay I might find in Austin, TX? I can't say I'm in love with Three Philosphers (though very good); and the only good Belgian I can find here is an occasional cask aged Chimay @$50/bomber

I have lived in Oregon for most of my life and definitely don't think Oregon beer is better than Californian beer. Realistically it is mostly pretentious yuppie shit and very amateurish/self-indulgent. Barley Brown's is consistently great. Deschutes is sometimes great but usually boring. But the rest is definitely less than great. Look at what's popular among "craft beer" people-- hophead IPAs, mostly. And over-hopped takes on styles where the piney hops seem inappropriate. And then silly "artisanal" approximations of belgian styles, for the New Seasons beer and wine aisle. Many Californian breweries are distributed and admired the world over; oregon beer culture is mostly just a circlejerk. It is a great state for distribution but it does not generate as much as it takes from elsewhere

Living in England, have some incredible European breweries at my fingertips.

Next year I have to move back to fucking Ontario, Canada where beer is ruled with the LCBO Iron fist.

I know there are some good local breweries there, but they're certainly not as accessible

Feels shitty man.
