Bread, porridge and stews typically. Meat wasn't exactly tough to come by, but preserving it required a large amount of salt. Beer would have been the drink of choice for the whole family (kids included). All in all pretty normal food. Just less of a selection than we have today I suppose.

Not very strong. It also had a bunch of gross floating shit in it so they had to drink it with a straw. True story.

Looks a lot like the sweet, dark, low-alcohol beers we traditionally have at Christmastime in Denmark and probably the rest of Scandinavia.
Pretty delicious but very fattening.

iirc small beer was made because Alfred the Great was super religious and didn't like the fact that the peasants were drunk all the time. even wild yeast will make 5% and back in the good old days they would freeze wine to concentrate the alcohol

Ya. You do it with cider to make applejack. Alcohol freezes at a lower temperature so it separates from the water. You chip off the ice and it leaves a purer form of alcohol.

We used to do this leaving cider in the barn over winter time. Good shit.

People knew about the dangers of alcohol before then. They probably would've known how to make weaker drinks that could be had at any time without making someone drunk.
