It isn't a gimmick, dark beers and stouts often have natural hints of chocolate, coffee, caramel, fruit cake etc due to the roasting of the malt or barley, without adding these flavors in. Brewers have decided to accompany these natural hints with subtle sweet flavors, as the natural bitter savoury body of the stout or porter goes well with a contrasting bitterness.

The flavors in many of these stouts are subtle, you get the full bodied bitterness plus the background flavors of their chosen sweet ingredient. If you haven't tried one, I recommend Samuel Smith's organic chocolate stout, you can get it in many upmarket bottle shops in the US and on Amazon online.

>>11003852
This, stouts and porters are high in flavor and imperial stouts can go up to 15% abv, these beers are not for sessioning, and because many people prefer low abv pisswater or overhopped lagers, they are frightened and confused by the heavyweights of beer. Sweet stouts go great when paired with dessert and you only need one or two to get a real good buzz on.

Its not a marketing ploy, nor a gimmick to have sweet flavors in a stout or porter, and to describe it amd advertise it in the name or label on the beer. It is used to give the beer a specific set of sweet notes that pair well with a thick savoury bitter taste of the beer.

If a baker was selling banana or coffee flavored bread, and had baked the fresh ingredients into the batch to pair it with the savoury taste of the bread, it is not a gimmick or marketing ploy to describe the product as banana or coffee bread. Labelling it as plain bread would simply be a falsehood and people would buy it and be disappointed if they didn't want a sweet loaf of bread. The same principle applies to these sweet stouts and porters.

To be honest your ignorance is showing quite a lot here, thinking that the descriptions of the sweet flavors in these beers are a 'gimmick. It's obvious you have never tried one, you really should pick one up and give it a taste, they are very drinkable and delicious beers.

Well then if it's not to your taste, that means you just don't like a sweet dark beer and that doesn't make it a gimmick, just because you don't like it now does it?

>>11004380
It is now the norm for brewers to brew batches of their aignature dark beer with a sweet ingredient that compliments the style of the taste of the original brew. It's hardly a gimmick. If you're referring to the style of labelling and marketing with wacky graphics and names, many breweries do this with IPAs and other beers , even big breweries such as brew dog do this, it's hardly a gimmick and more of a trend of how the market for craft beer has gone over the years.

Just because you personally dislike something, or havent noticed the trend because you only buy macro brewed below average beer at the local supermarket, doesn't mean you have to relegate it to being a 'gimmick or a 'meme' to make yourself feel better about either your own taste, or your own ignorance.

>>11004468
Many of the beers posted have the fresh sweet ingredients added to the batch of beer during the brewing process, they aren't just dumping in artificial flavors to make it taste like a cheap soda.

The result of this is that the sweet flavor does not overpower the bitter body of the stout, in the same way many successful IPAs have a fruit pairing such as grapefruit, or lemon and retain both the flavor of the hops and the sweetness of the fruit for a well rounded and delicious beer.

The dessert in a can chocolate fudge cake stout for example, has notes of brown sugar, nuts, vanilla, with a slight caramel, and the chocolate that is added is bitter chocolate, so it teams up with the bitterness of the stout to add more to the savoury flavors against the sweet notes that were added.

If it was quite simply a sugary stout which tasted of nothing but sweetness, people wouldn't buy it because they primarily want a well brewed stout.

Instead of making judgements about it being a gimmick, when it is actually quite the opposite and follows the trend of many other popular beers such as IPAs, why don't you try a decent one from your local bottle shop, or order one online?

That's fine, you shop to your taste (or rather shop to your perceived notion of what should and shouldn't be in a sweet dark beer).

I have picked up many flavors of sweet dark beer over the years that others may be turned off buy the sweet ingredient, or the wacky labelling and names, but more often than not many of these beers were absolutely gorgeous, and the brewer had gotten the mix absolutely perfect according to the natural roasted notes of the stout or porter on its own.

Pic related is an example, it's quite possibly the most delicious and drinkable beer I've ever had, yet many would scorn it for its sweet ingredient.

I have a lot of beer purist friends who would shout something like that down, I bought many of them a bottle and they couldn't believe how incredible it tasted.

Be adventurous and try some of these beers, you will be pleasantly surprised.
