You put the time in and don't want to feel like an incompetent so either you recognize the lower quality, but justify it with lying to yourself, or your dumb brain is saving you the embarrassment and tricks you into thinking you liked it more. If you work for an hour, you'll have more than enough money to buy food you love with leftovers, but if you prep, cook, and clean a meal, that'll be over an hour (guaranteed. anyone who says any time shorter is a liar) that you could have worked a real job.

This is not really the case. It's more that you can tune whatever you're cooking to be exactly how you want it. A luxury you don't get at a restaurant. If I make something that's not as good as a restaurant I can recognize that just fine.

The KFC near me is fine. That said all the fast food restaurants (except hardee's) in my area have pretty high standards of quality when it comes to cleanliness and service.

I have the same feeling about pizzas.
I have never eaten a homemade pizza that was better as those from a specialized restaurant.
Yet everyone just raves about their pizzas being so much better than restaurant bought.
Better than frozen shit maybe (and still, some store bought pizzas are surprisingly good), but better than those of a restaurant that outputs hundreds of pies a day from a 400°C woodfire? No chance.

Most of these people aren't obsessed with pizza enough to own a pizza stone or a 1/2" thick steel sheet metal slab.

If you want to make decent pizza in a normal oven, you will need either of those, and you'll need to crank the temp up to 500.
