Brit living in the States here. Why is American drinking culture so wank?

>mmh yes I'll have 6 tiny bottles of super hoppy IPA called "Smokey Bastard" from my local microbrewery please

Nightclubs are shit too, I want cheap drinks and to get sweaty with my mates, not to drive to some weird expensive bar with nobody dancing and tipping.

Legal limit is about two pints of beer. In parts of Western Europe it's absolutely zero.

You'd be unlucky to actually get pulled over by a policeman though, they're usually too busy in the town centres with the crowds of drunks. If they do stop you, or after an accident, they breathalyse you at the scene, then take you to HQ to test you on the proper machine, in which time you might be below the limit.

Drink driving is not really a thing there outside of police shows; risking your own life, your passengers and other road users marks you out as a total despicable cunt, I know public transport is shit in the US but I can't believe how flippant some are about it

I'm an alcoholic American and I always envied Europeans for the luxury of being to drink pretty much everywhere, all the time. But the truth is I don't think I could handle it. I have too little self-control where booze is concerned. It's pathetic. So it's probably a good thing I live here where there is less of a drinking culture and somewhat more stringent alcohol laws/regulations.....

But I will say this, Brit: Your bars close way too early at night. It's crazy. People are just starting to go out here around the time your bars start closing over there. I lived in Chicago for a while, and bars were classified by their closing time. 2:00 AM Bars were sneered at, 3:00 AM bars more acceptable and fairly common, the occasional (and usually very seedy) 4:00 AM bars, and the rare 5:00 AM bar. In London, though, it seemed like the whole town shut down around midnight. Hardly enough time to get properly "sweaty with the mates"....

Also, I wonder what you would make of Canada. In a lot of ways there slightly more European than the U.S., but in this respect they're even more strict about booze than we are. I've had a hell of a time more than once trying to find a place to buy alcohol in Toronto and Windsor. And statistics show they drink less than we do as well. Who would have thought?

The first time I was exposed to "drinking culture" was in the UK when I was 16. I'd had some light beers at parties and stolen liquor from me and my friends' parents before, so I wasn't a stranger to alcohol. But it really was striking to see older people there having a bottle or two of wine a night like it was just part of dinner time. In retrospect, that's not that much booze from a health standpoint, but more than I was used to seeing adults over 30 drink. My relatives and friends' relatives usually had a couple whiskies/wines/beers at a family gather or bbq or whatever, and maybe a couple wines/beers a night, but the frequency and amount that brit boomers seemed to drink was almost double that.

Having worked in a liquor store, I really think you start to have a problem around a pint of hard liquor per day (8-9 drinks a night). Some dudes would go through a handle in a week, which is insane.

Yes, the "sensible" cutoff is around 4 drinks. Most health professionals would put it at NO MORE than 3 drinks for a man, and 2 for a woman (drinks being an actual measure of ethanol, not actual volume of liquid).

By my own, completely non-scientific and anecdotal evidence, a half pint of hard liquor @ 40% is 4 "drinks", (I count my shots as 50ml for easier measuring, most say 45ml). 250ml of booze is a lot to have every day for decades, perhaps your entire adult life. You won't make it to old age with that kind of indulgence, even if you might be able to hold it together mentally at that level.

Fun fact: long-term, low grade alcoholism (which is about the amount you describe drinking-wise) is now thought to be more harmful long-term than episodic binge drinking of irresponsible proportions. It's arguably better to have a night of heavy drinking, at least where your liver is concerned (your brain, not so much) where you down 12+ drinks over a 4-5 hour period, than it is to drink 4-5 drinks a night every night for years or even decades.

As an American this weirds me out even though ive known people to do this all my life. Every fucking time I go to get groceries or are stuck waiting in line at an airport I'm listening to some guy telling me about his grandkids or some girl talking about her professor and all the while sprinkling in all kinds of personal information for a story I didnt ask for or want to hear. Its always seemed so odd that people basically tell everything short of their social security number to strangers here.

That makes it even worse. Why tell an autist your life story, where you currently live, who you work for, how long you've been working there, where youre going, how much money you have, names of your family members, where you went to school, who you bank with, etc. Thats like literally asking to get robbed. Either violently if its a nigger or via a cyber crime if its truly an autist.

Hell now that I think about it, half of the crime in this country would probably disappear if idiots didnt go out of their way to paint targets on their backs for strangers and people acted more like Europeans when it came to dealing with strangers.

Idk man, that's definitely the case in a lot of places, but not the rule for all bars.

Happy hours in Colorado actually have good deals on liquor and cocktails (at least for going out, obviously it's gonna be cheaper to do it yourself at home) and shots there as well as where I live are, for the most part MUCH more generous than 1oz, lol. Also surly bartenders get surly tips, so you just exposed yourself as not knowing what the fuck you're talking about.

I get "double" shots or homepours fairly regularly even here in "Puritan" Massachusetts, where I'm pretty sure doubles are illegal to serve.

Also the last time I got a surly bartender was when me and a bud stumbled into a random hole in a wall only to find out a couple minutes in that it was a gay bar. The bartender I guess thought that we went in to cause trouble and was likely suspicious. We weren't and stuck around to finish a game of pool and left.
