At the same price point I could go to:
Habit and get a burger on toasted sourdough with avocado and a side of delicious fried green beans.
Burger King for perfectly salted, crispy fries and a big, tasty burger.
Or Five Guys and get fully customizable burgers and shakes, and free peanuts.

Every single other burger place is better than In and Out, and I say that having lived in California my entire life. I can't understand why it's so popular.

OP reporting back in. Should have made this thread more than 20 minutes before I had to leave. Ended up going with a double double with whole grilled onion and chilies, with a plain fries. Fries aren't bad, but definitely need something; I see why everyone says they suck.

Yeah the problem with Innout fries is that they're not double fried like most fast food chains have. When most chains get their potatoes, they've already been flash fried and then frozen when they're delivered to the store. That's why they come out so crispy outside and pillowy inside. Innout cuts the potatoes in house and fries em once so it's generally a good idea to get the fries "well done" to alleviate that issue.

I work at a restaurant where we cut our own fries daily and know all about throwing fresh cut potato into hot oil. Not sure I'd really like the well done. I should have just thrown them in the oven for 5 minutes but I was hungry.

Glad you enjoyed the burger, the one by my place is just too damn long of a line to regularly go there, but sometimes you just want a double double.

I guess I'll try them like that next time. They were only sitting in the bag for 20 minutes at most but were pretty soggy. I've always avoided giving it a try because the line is always around the entire parking lot and into the next parking lot over, but it wasn't terrible at 11pm. Somehow took a little under 10 minutes with probably a dozen cars ahead of me.

It's in a pretty affluent small town in NorCal. It's weird because there's tons of good restaurants, but every fast food place always seems to have a line late at night - though nothing compared to In N Out; people who live here talk about it like it's the best thing on the planet, which I've never understood. This location opened up a couple years ago right before I moved here; there are others around, but they're all a town or two over. I live a town over, but work in the affluent area (affluent as in Lexus and Mercedes are the norm; there were two Lamborghini's, a custom Ferrari, and a Rolls Royce parked outside my restaurant tonight).

Seriously, I think In N Out is some kind of California pride thing with people who are from here. They're cult like the way they talk about and defend it.
