In Australia we don't use the category "dark meat." We just look at each cut on its own merit. If we knew it as dark meat, we'd give it a negative association with excess skin pigmentation. But we don't, so thighs end up being more expensive than breasts.

You pay more for the breast because it has better nutritional value, not because it tastes better. That said, I can get breasts for 2 dollars a pound. It's a good meat to help hit 180g of protein a day with and if I'm gonna have something fatty, it's going to be a proper steak.

Roasting whole chicken is so damn easy, too.
>pat entire bird nice and dry with paper towels
>season liberally with salt and pepper
>tuck wings under and tie legs together with twine
>place breast side up in a pan and bake at 450F for ~20 minutes per pound
Then you get to make delicious stock from the bones.

>> No.10987688

>>10987400
It doesn't have "better nutritional value", it just has a bit more fat than protein. Getting sufficient protein is extremely easy for most people in the Western world, and there is nothing inherently unhealthy about dietary fat. Chicken breast is more expensive because there is more demand for it, and for no other reason.

>> No.10987717

>>10987688
Let me rephrase that then. If you are on a high protein diet, chicken breast which is higher in protein is the better choice. Nutritional value I suppose is defined by what an individual needs but for those who focus on high protein, it's one of the best meats you could have.

>> No.10987743

>>10987717
Why would the tiny % difference in protein yield matter though? It sounds like it's people fixating on MOAR PROTEINZ without realizing that they're already eating a huge excess.

why would anyone need to eat anywhere close to 180g/day? That's excess even for a full-on bodybuilder taking steroids.

>> No.10987788

>>10987743
No it isn't. Lifting heavy and for muscle mass you want to eat 1 to 1.5g per pound of body weight you have. When on a cut, you want to try and match gram for pound to help prevent muscle loss. Being on a cut and not wanting to lose muscle, fitting 180g into 1500-1800 calories daily means very lean meats.

For the average person it is an excess, but for very physical jobs or lifestyles you need it to keep building. It all just depends on what each person is aiming for.

>> No.10987800

>No it isn't. Lifting heavy and for muscle mass you want to eat 1 to 1.5g per pound of body weight you have.
Have a solid citation for that or are you just parroting bullshit like most fitfags?

I was a bodybuilder back in college. I took steroids (Frontloaded with sustanon, took Test E and Equipoise). Dianabol too. Even for that 1 to 1.5g/lb is crazy excessive.

>> No.10987972

Many official articles fall in your favor. But from my personal experience, high protein has been more beneficial over the years. Having regular DEXA scans, I can usually build muscle and lose fat while on a cut if I combine approximately one hour of lifting 3-4 sets 8-12 reps with 2-4 miles of running or HIIT training. Before adopting a high protein diet, this workload left me exhausted.

Caveat to all that though is two months looks like 4 or less pounds of fat lost and 3 or less pounds of muscle mass gain, but makes for a sustainable lifestyle. So I believe your point has more truth to it on average. Personally, with the number of conflicting opinions, I don't believe one school of thought is inherently wrong. It's more a matter of how much work you do, when you intake, and your genetics. This would explain the large deviations among studies.

>> No.10988026

>>10987972
>It's more a matter of how much work you do, when you intake, and your genetics. This would explain the large deviations among studies.
Agreed.

In my opinion the crazy high protein intake recommendations come from ignorance combined with the trend for exaggeration over time. Obviously a certain amount of protein is required to build muscle. Nobody denies that. But I'm sure that figure has been inflated time and time again as it gets repeated. I.e. some scientist publishes a paper that calls for a minimum of 30g of protein. Some meathead thinks that if 30 is good then 40 must be better, so he suggests 40. Someone reads that post and repeats it, doing the same thing: if 40 is good then 50 must be better since 50 is bigger than 40, and everyone knows that protein is good for MUH GAINZZ. Repeat. And that's how you end up with nonsense like 200g a day.

>> No.10988052

>>10988026
It also feels like a lot of that mentality is more because somebody wants to eat a lot of meat, and not focus on the most important aspect. The actual training and recovery portion. It's easy to yell about gainz when you just want to eat a steak. So back to the actual topic of OP, I agree that demand drives up the cost. Partially caused by that very bro science aspect causing a higher demand.

>> No.10988086

>>10988052
>Partially caused by that very bro science aspect causing a higher demand.

IMHO the "demand" created by fitness enthusiasts looking to optimize their diet is minimal. The number of people who actually bother to compute their macros to that degree are small.

IMO there are two much bigger factors:
1) picky eaters who think dark meat is "gross"
2) facebook mommies who heard that breast is lower in fat than leg and want to avoid that evil nasty fat.

Hell, for many years now "all white meat" has been used as a marketing term on product packaging and menus. Just like "gluten free" people tend to think of that as a "good" thing. I'm sure that has affected an awful lot of sheeple.
