I've noticed that a fair amount of water evaporates if I steep hot tea without a cover. Maybe an eight-inch or something. Could that be why some people cover it? Or maybe it's something with oxidation?

There is no valid reason to do this I can think of at all, but tea aficionados often insist on it.

It activates the tea leaf concentrate to provide a more potent brew. So yes, always cover while steeping.

i drink cold tea so i dont think it matters in my case. make 2L of black tea in a pitcher. sometimes drink it at night and fuck up my sleep

There is some actual use to covering your tea since you want to keep the temperature of the water just below 100 degrees celcius at all times.

it would also help prevent evaporation of some of the more volatile aromatic compounds, which may help retain flavour
