Okay so my girlfriend is taking me over to her families for a get together or some shit, and they're all puerto ricans and going to be serving spanish dishes that I've never once ate before. How is puerto rican food? is it nasty? is it just spicy shit? I'm too afraid to ask her and dont want to anger any of her family. Is it true that I'll get my ass kicked if I dont eat all the food served to me?

Puerto Rican is not Mexican. It's more like tropical Spanish food. Lots of sweet plantains balanced with fish or savory slow cooked meats. It's flavorful and we'll seasoned but not an emphasis on peppers.

I had a Puerto Rican sandwich about a month ago: a Jibarito. Fried plantains instead of bread. It was ok. Not that great actually.

It was rather bland actually. Steak and grilled onions with some kind of sauce. Pretty forgettable.

Don't worry OP. Puerto Rican food has a tsunami of flavor. I'm sure it'll wipeout any negative thoughts you had about it before. Sorry about you dating the latino equivalent of a nigger tho.

I like em both. I've yet to find an entire cuisine that I can't find things I enjoy.

Why does every fucking Mexican get upset when they get introduced to other Latin cuisines? It's like you can't comprehend that food doesn't have to be wrapped in a tortilla and can have flavors other than spicy.

I'm not defending anything, but I'm definitely not going to put down a whole cuisine when I know I can find things I like. A lot of the time I'm just not exposed to enough of a cuisine to figure everything out or let it grow on me.

It'll be pretty good OP, don't worry. Nobody's gonna kick your ass for not eating everything, and it'll probably all be buffet style anyway. Try the beans and rice and smoked pork shoulder (arroz con gondulez and pernil respectively. If it is a decent sized gathering, both will likely be served). I doubt anything will be very spicy, although it'll assuredly be very flavorfully seasoned.

Lots of pork (especially baked in tons of seasoning, with crispy skin), beans, seasoned rice, maybe starches like boiled yuca/cassava with garlic, plantains (fried and sweet). Yuca and plantains remind me of fries without salt, so they’re in a similar league. Good luck

At least they're not Cuban. Only thing they eat is overcooked chicken and fish, shredded beef, rice cooked with black beans, and a trio of tomato, cucumber and cabbage. Maybe you get some boiled plantain if you're lucky. The only "sauce" they seem to know is vinegar with onions and cumin.
