I don't play video games but honestly I don't see how that example is any different than a room where you sit and play instruments or room to read or a typical workshop / art studio. They evolved from "Feels bad man" frog and "feels guy". They originally both represented similar emotions, but then people began using them in various situations. It got out of control and now you can't go anywhere on this site without being constantly bombarded by different renditions of the same 2 characters.
