My Viet gf once said "hold your nose and try this" when presenting durian. She had not taken into account that my government issued childhood had left me completely incapable of passing negative judgment on any food placed in front of me under orders. But the fruit in OP's pic is jackfruit which is objectively fucking heavenly on all accounts.

>> No.10893635

PSA: that's a jackfruit, not a durian. Still smells bad, but tastes delicious.

you can get jackfruit in brine and it's supposed to be a meat substitute. otherwise it's very sweet.

i mean yeah your first three points are pretty accurate. that's why canned is easier, but you sacrifice freshness of course. i don't know why you didn't think it was sweet though. juicy fruit gum is sweet.

Well is it supposed to be dry? There almost no juice in these fucking pods

>> No.10894061

Ok, jackfruit is a very picky fruit.
1. it doesn't taste good outside of southeast asia.
2. unless you're asian, you probably won't pick a good one
3. if it's not good, you can cook it in chili, soup, curry. etc. when you cook a dry, unsweet jackfruit, it has a texture like potato.
4. good, ripe, sweet, juicy jackfruit is amazing beyond belief, i ate one yesterday and it was subperb

but once again, unless you live in southeast asia, you probably never had a good jackfruit.

Have you smelled one in person? I worked with a woman who brought one in and froze it (to reduce the smell) and brought it around for anyone who wanted to try some. I was curious but not curious enough.

Yours was probably not ripe. You can tell if its ready by the smell. Should have a "juicy fruit" gum smell. Too ripe and it gets stringy though.

Although, I've been tricked a few times, it's the only somewhat reliable method I've been able to discern.

I've bought it frozen in Wisconsin a few times and it has tasted great. I'd pick up a fresh one in an instant if I knew where to find one for less than $50.

dragonfruit is fine, the problem is if you buy it in 'murica they're like $6 each

I've always been one to dog dragon fruit, but I've always had the white ones in America. I just had the red ones in Vietnam, and while I still wouldn't pay $5/fruit, it was pleasant. Almost like a cross between a strawberry and a watermelon.

I've long since given up buying whole or even cut jakka.
Or even cleaned, for that matter. I buy it frozen because canned is too sweet for me. 250G for $2 ain't bad. Only problem is I miss the seeds. You boil or roast them and they're delicious.

I mean... Its grown in certain parts of America (the continent). Its even grown in Mexico (and florida) some times. Its juicy but the pulp has fiber that gets in the way all the time. It smells a bit like cheese but its nothing to be mad about (or as unreasonably mad like some people her are complaining about). Its a very complex sweet fruit and it can taste like bananas, melon, mango and bubblegum at the same time. I cant understand how people fry them and say its a savory replacement for meat since it just doesnt taste like it would be a good substitute.

I love when its made into gelatto (nieve de garrafa) :)
