The Bible is well worth studying as a piece of literature since just about everything that was written after it draws from it.
Actually believing in it may be worth less, but knowing it is, as the kids say, a "must".

Of course. But the people who read them more than once and study them aren't "studying" them in the same way that people at bible study are studying the bible.

That kind of bible study is basically book club for housewives who don't have a single thought in their head other than what they hear at church. It has nothing to do with the bible as a piece of literature or it's cultural influence.

Thanks, but my undergrad had a humanities 110 class that all freshmen had to take and we read everything from the pre-Socratics through the bible and early theologians. I also have a graduate degree in philosophy. You don't need to study the bible; most people know most of it already simply though it's ubiquity throughout Western culture. Reading it once is plenty.

Big fat lie number one

>most people know most of it already
And number two

If you had bothered to pay attention tot he conversation the exact argument for reading the Bible is that it's referenced throughout Western culture, but that certainly doesn't mean it goes the other way; you don't learn the Bible by reading other literature, generally speaking.

Might as well say you don't have to read the Odyssey because you read Joyce.

The Odyssey doesn't have 2000 (or 3000) years of everyday influence through this ongoing religion thing, so that's a bad analogy (though most people still know many of the stories from the Odyssey).

We spent a week covering it (lectures and seminars). Even if you'd never read a page and started a week earlier that's still less than 100 pages a night to get through it by the final lecture. I had one professor who assigned us all of Capital Vol. 1 for a single weekend (he realized that was unrealistic and gave us about a third of the chapters as a recommendation instead.

So not we're doubling the time available all of a sudden. That's nice.
Yeah, you can read the Bible in 2 weeks but you're probably not finding time to read anything else and actually getting into the meat of it seems out of the question. You could easily spend a couple weeks discussion each single book in the Bible.
I just don't know why they'd bother trying to cover the whole thing like this rather than picking out a few choice bits and focusing on those. Exodus plus one of the Gospels for example.

How did, "we spent a week on the bible" imply that we read it in a week? Do you usually start reading a text the day you're going to start going over it in a class?
