Hi, I'm attending a Fourth of July party with some friends and family and I've been asked to bring a side.

I know we're having brisket and pulled-pork sandwiches. Someone is bringing BBQ beans and someone else is doing mac&cheese.

Anyways my question is what side should I bring? What side would you guys recommend?

This.

Alternatively you can bring: a salad that doesn't suck, BBQ meatballs, watermelon, or some chilled shellfish: shrimp cocktail, muscles, crab legs, for example.

They will likely have a website or menu somewhere online.

Big batch of sweet potato mash.
Cut up sweet potato, boil for 20 minutes, mash with some pepper.
You can warm in a microwave.

do you just not like potatoes or is it the mayo that makes you dislike potato salad? You could make a mustard-based potato salad, or just some roasted potatoes or potato wedges instead. Wedges are really easy to make and if spice 'em well and pair 'em with some good dipping sauces, they taste amazing.

Alternatively, cornbread (or hush-puppies if you want to go the extra mile) or collard greens.

A simple relish tray is always a nice addition to any gathering. Black/green olives, cucumbers, celery, baby carrots, cherry tomatoes, cauliflower/broccoli and some pickled okra with a simple french onion dip is easy and agreeable to most people. I do a simple herb dip, but you could do something as simple as ranch if you want. I always bring some pimento cheese spread with thin crackers and a side of pickled jalapenos when I make a relish tray, which I find makes a nice addition.

Not a true side or high brow, but great for people to mingle around and snack on before the real meal.

Most potlucks or gatherings have a several lack of fruit or veggies that isn't slathered in a fuckton of unhealthy shit. Bring watermelon or fruit salad (one that isn't 80% cantaloupe/honeydew). If you have the capacity to cook at the gathering, get a huge pot and boil up a bunch of ears of corn. Goes great with a little butter/salt/pepper or you can go mexican style, whatever people prefer.
