>hawaiian sweet rolls, whole package cut in half lengthwise
>on the stove mix together one grated onion, 1 and 1/2 sticks butter, 2 tbs yellow mustard, 2 tbs poppy seeds, 1 tsp worcestershire and cook on medium low until onions are tender
>liberally apply to every nook and cranny of bread, inside and out
>layer on ham and swiss to your liking and wrap in foil, bake at 375 for 15 minutes

That's my picnic staple, after that I'll bring veggies and dip, chips, cookies

Fresh fruit is an essential. Cheese is also highly recommended. I would add a carb like hummus and pita bread in there. Pickles are also delightful.

First, get a nice picnic blanket that is waterproof on one side, if you live in a wet environment.

Food wise, last picnic i had with my gf I brought:
>4 chicken schnizel
>container of diced potatoes and onion
>2 cups of salad
>4 slices of olive oil and garlic soaked sourdough
>bottle of rose
>3 cans of beer

I don’t know why, but I really like cold fried chicken at picnics. I think it’s from The Hardy Boys books. Actually, I’m pretty sure it’s where I got it from.

Do you really let "Reddit hipsters" tell you what you can and can't enjoy? I couldn't imagine avoiding something because other people like the same thing.

Thai spring rolls are nice. Cold sandwiches are a classic option. Cheese with some crusty bread like a baguette. Some good takeout bbq or gyros were something me and my ex used to do in the park a lot.

Picnics during summer? Way too hot, way too many bugs. No thanks. Any cold or semi-cold items are going to be warm whenever you arrive at the destination.
