I did it once when I moved to a new city and didn't know anyone. I had a pint at the bar. It was so depressing and uncomfortable.

This. I used to walk into new bars at any time and could always strike up conversation with regulars and fit in. It's simple as fuck. People want to talk about themselves and their interests, so you just size them up and start prodding with some humorous anecdotes about yourself and life in general. I don't do bars anymore, though, so maybe no one can discuss anything other than politics anymore, idk.
