I see is as a perfect storm of three factors:
1) America was the first country to industrialize food production to a large degree.
2) Post-WWII America saw a ton of cheap restaurants like McD's appear. suddenly "eating out" was no longer the domain of the rich only.
3) Decades of advertising feeding lies to homemakers about how cooking from scratch is "drudgery" and how the miracle of modern technology will free housewives from slavery in the kitchen
4) USA is a relatively young country and comprised of people from all over the world. Because of that there are no longstanding serious traditions regarding food.

As a result cooking skills have been lost, and multiple generations have grown up with low standards.
