Boiling them is actually very American, that's how mostly every street vendor in the big cities do it. But dirty Filipinos do boil their hot dogs and put them in literally everything. Mexicans use a fire grill for most of their cooking.

depends on the hotdog. If they are natural casing grilling/frying is better. If they're soft pork/chicken blend type dogs then boiling is nice.

I only eat boiled hot dogs from hot dog carts. Something about the sausages sitting all day in cloudy greasy water next to the street and being served on one of those little coffee filter-like paper hot dog holders makes them taste extra good.

You're supposed to boil them until they're warm which takes no time at all, and then finish them on the grill on very high heat. If you grill them the whole time the skin starts to crack and you lose some of the juiciness.
I do this when I make kielbasa or what have you that has the cheese in it.
