Which $300 smoker should I get?

>> No.10703846

Weber.

>> No.10703864

Oil drum desu

>> No.10703868

Uh, the one on the left. The one that looks like a barrel probably has crude oil residue in it and it will poison ur food

>older proven design from longtime manufacturer

or

>cut up new thin gauge barrels with horseshoes welded on

PBC is the Harley of smokers, overpriced garbage with bullshit patriotic merchandising.
WSM is fine, but still charcoal so you're going to spend 20 minutes getting it packed and going, and then have to constantly fiddle with it.
Once you're in the $300 range, you should step up to a small pellet smoker. It makes smoking so effortless you'll actually use it regularly, and you'll have a greater temp range for more variety.

Left. The right is probably the one hipsters use because of it's "rustic" design but probably works half as good as the left one.

Bullet smokers are shit tier, I've never had one that will hold temperature.

Bullit smokers are literally babby's first smoker, so you should just buy the cheapest one you can find. If you find you like smoking, you'll move on up. And fwiw, the barrel smoker is the prototype of the bullit smoker since the nogs that originated BBQ would just use these scrap barrels to smoke in. And they didn't necessarily contain petroleum products or noxious chemicals, they're often used to ship food. My local bee keeper where I buy my bulk honey ships these barrels full of honey all over the US.

The hanging technique with the pbc allows you to cook MUCH more food than the weber but if that doesn't factor in your needs, toss a coin.

I use this type of smoker and I love it. Though I will admit I'm no smoking expert. To anyone who is, how do you like these?

When you can't DIY you end up paying through the nose. Applies to all things.

What's stopping you from hanging meat in the weber?

>> No.10705430

>>10705105
this, i didnt understand for a moment why you were talking about an oil drum being 300$

>the handles are fucking horseshoes too

absolute hipster garbage for mid-life crisis actors and people from portland who think they're country because they live in oregon and/or maine. you could build one yourself for like 50$. and thats a really high estimate. you can just get oil drums for free if you look hard enough

The Pit Barrel cooker comes with hooks, the WSM does not.

If you just hang ribs for example from the uppermost grate it might be uncomfortably close to the coals and you might want to buy a mod that allows for higher hanging.

So in other words it's a really minor thing that is easily fixed with some old wire coathangers. gotcha.

not quite but you could nigger rig it anyways.
you could also plug some holes, fill it with water and raise goldfish.
the suggestion was made thinking OP wanted to unbox and start smoking.

what would it take to convert an oil drum into a smoker and make it food safe?

You know you can buy clean, unused barrels, right?

>> No.10706528

a lot of fire
but why use oil drums instead of steel food safe drums
or better yet, stainless steel new drums

>> No.10706536

>>10706528
If you've got stainless-tier money you can get something much better: a thick, heavy, steel vessel like an old propane tank.

>> No.10706546

>>10706528
>>10706536
how about both cheap and safe? as in, more bang for the buck, if you will

>> No.10706548

maybe a surplus Sherman M4 tank?

>> No.10706552

>>10706536
this. the only thing drums have going for them is their easy availability. they suck though: thin flimsy metal. mechanically weak, warps/bends easily so your smoker leaks, and doesn't retain heat worth a shit. thick and heavy is ideal.

>> No.10706565

>>10706546
new stainless drums cost several hundred $$$.

For the same amount of money you could go buy a brand new piece of thick wall steel pipe AND pay a dude to weld a door and handles on it for you.
