Sup /ck/, I'm wannabe /fit/ and I'm interested in getting into canned sardines for the nutrition and cheapness. I've never had them before and don't know where to start. What kind should I get and how should I serve them up? Mainly looking for something I can prepare quickly and cheaply, since I'm getting sick of tuna sandwiches. Also general canned seafood thread I guess.

Bread? I thought you said you were /fit/. Something doesn't add up.

They're not bad on toast, though. Don't bother heating them. They can't tolerate much cooking, as like most canned foods they've spent a bit of time being overheated in a retort. They're already on the verge of disintegrating.

if you're worried about being grossed out, buy skinless/boneless fillets. season and king oscar are two brands i buy on the regular that are very consistently good.

boneless and skinless will be very mild and palatable -- like a tin of slightly fishier tuna. if you find it's still a little heavy, have some toast or saltines ready, they'll help soak up the oiliness.

sometimes i mix mine up in a bowl with maybe a little mayo, hot sauce, black pepper, pickled jalapenos, whatever. but usually i just eat them out of the tin plain.

when you're accustomed to skinless/boneless and you think you want to try something new, then you can try the shit that has all the bones, scales, tails, attached.

>> No.10703043

they're not cold though, they're room temperature. since they're on the fishier side, i think they'd be more off-putting if they were hot. i've never tried it, though.

Back when I smoked weed, canned sardines were a literal top choice for munchie food at like 3am. Saying this legitimately. My food budget was and is unlimited.
They're good.
If I'm going for full effect: probably with those butter-crackers, extra mustard and dill. aaand, maybe a salad and a can of unflavored carbonated water. If you're dying, a bowl of white rice too. Healthy, and.. maybe 2$ total.

Sardines typically are headless/finless/gutted/scaled, but with the skin on and bones intact. Basically you're gonna want to take em out, use a fork to peel the meat off in a side and discard the spine. The "ribs" are generally so thin you wouldn't even notice they were there if noone told you.

A lot of douchebags ITT are giving shit responses

When I first starting eating deenz I found them too fishy and oily. Don't buy the store brand or cheapest brands, at least at first, and I like the mustard flavor personally but my boyfriend likes the Mediterranean ones, so I'd say just pick out flavors you like. If the skin and fins bother you, you can buy skinless deenz. I just pull the fins out and throw them away, my bf eats them.

We love deenz and other canned fish on toast with a little cream cheese. You can also eat on crackers, with any sauce, however you like, really. Sometimes I like to mash up the deenz with mayo, hot sauce, pickles, whatever I have and make like a pseudo "tuna salad" for crackers. I made fisherman's eggs once years and years ago before the meme hype. It's good.

My only hint is like >>10703015 says they're already quite mushy, so you'll have to be careful heating them. If you had a toaster oven that would be a good use, toasting bits of sardine on some already slightly toasted bread. Mmm.

I only get the sardines packed in water. Why not the olive oil packed ones? Because most of the olive oil they use is adulterated (ie. cut with cheaper oils like canola, etc.)

But seafood in general is amazing, and sardines is just one of several that I eat.

Visit different supermarkets to see the variety. My most recent discoveries: cod liver from Iceland, and salmon fish heads. Something similar to sardines is Sprats, which I've not tried yet, but will buy a can next time I'm in the Jewish area again.

Trying to find cheaper options than King Oscar, because it's the only olive oil packed brand at my grocery store and they are $3.49 a can, which is more expensive than fresh fish. Is the King that expensive by you guys or am I getting fleeced? Too much sodium can cause heart disease, yes, but that level is quite a bit higher than flawed 50-year-old studies would have you believe. Much more dangerous for heart health is not consuming enough sodium. A lot of studies are coming out now that show American recommendations for sodium intake are actually probably too low, and recommendations are going up accordingly. Basically, it's fine. Sardines are pretty high in salt, and if they're packed in oil, fat. Also, since they're only like $1-2 a pack, try them all and figure out which one you like. Be warned, though. Some brands use several different species of "sardine" from many different countries, so QC and consistency is often an issue.

But if you want an easy snack, they fit the bill. My vote goes for this stuff. Walmart sells it. Basically pure protein (26 grams a can!), and delicious texture and flavor.

>> No.10717382

I usually post this recommendation, but I will again: get your favorite 'deenz packed in tomato sauce, and use them as the filler in a banh mi. It might be tricky getting pickled carrots and daikon, but using fresh or pickling your own will do just fine.

For the people say they don't like plain sardines: they're really more of a "beer snack", for me. I like them with triscuits, or maybe with dash of hot sauce if they're plain in water.

I poor those faggot into a bow and mash them with a fork.
Then I dice an onion on mix it with the mashed sardines
Then you can mix in whatever you want, I personally love to put wasabi an soy sauce inside or sometimes I put oregano.
Then you put sardine mix on a toast and eat it.

Unless these have >50g protein per $ or >2000kcal per $, they are not cheap food. Canned food rarely qualifies. More likely things like oats, rice, lentils, eggs/chicken, whey concentrate and canola oil are what can be combined to get /fit/ macros while getting adequate nutrition at dirt cheap total cost. A multivitamin is also the go-to solution to get micronutrients at minimum cost. Omega-3 is cheapest to get from fish oil supplements; eating fish is many times more expensive.Unfortunately the recommended varied diet with lots of fruits and vegetables is many times more expensive than using supplements, though you should eat a little to have a varied fiber sources in your diet and not just grains. Cheap vegetables are probably cabbage, beetroot, carrots and onions.

I use this to my advatage. Last time I had sardines, I put it into a small soup. It broke apart, and made the soup heartier and thicker, just like I hoped.

>has the additional benefit of being actually enjoyable to eat and thus preserving your sanity.

I think it's quite an exaggeration to say it like that implying enjoyment is a binary thing. Enjoyment is certainly a sliding scale which depends most of all on how you combine and prepare your ingredients. And also your meal timing. Intermittent fasting will increase your appetite for your feeding window and, thus, your enjoyment of whatever you eat. Doing strength training and acquiring the attitude that food is fuel for your gains can also add additional satisfaction to eating that comes from the understanding that the food you eat has the additional value of making you stronger and not just keeping you alive and healthy.

I enjoy my diet with that has just a small quantity of vegetables. I do feel like I'd like to eat more but really I enjoy my food sufficiently as is; I'm not suffering from the feeling of yearning more. Sufficient fat and salt are the most important things that allow cooking tasty meals from almost anything. Though I enjoy my veggies simply raw or steamed in the microwave. My vegetable portion is merely a small carrot, a small beetroot, one onion and some cabbage for a total weight of around 300g. I also use one clove of garlic in my dip sauce.
