No, you don't need shit to be a barista. To be a good barista, you need good conversation, but that's pretty easy. Just be friendly, say hello to people, make their coffee, and if they sit down, inquire about their day.

If you don't like taking to people, being a barista is not the career for you. Personally, I'm a cook, I could give two shits how a customer's day went. That's why I stay in the back in the kitchen, and mostly talk to other cooks, unless I'm banging out a server.

4. Buy a box of cheap popsicles, the ones with the corny jokes at the end. While you're making their drink(s), do the cordial "hey, how's it going? did you have the XYZ? I'll have it out in a second". When the drink is done and you're handing it out, deadpan a shitty joke aka "why can't a nose be 12 inches long? because then it would be a foot"

Most people find it off-putting, but the regulars eat it up, especially when they know you're only halfway trying to have a personality. Smell like vodka if at all possible.
