I'm attentive enough to find her poos on the lawn. On the few occasions where she's been ill and vomited I've found that too. Didn't notice any grass in it. I do see grass in her shits, though.
I took a few minutes to Bing this and it would seem that there are several theories about dogs eating grass:
*They're bored or just think it's fun/delicious
*They are trying to induce vomiting
*They do it to aid digestion

I found one case, which proves nothing of course, of a dog that ate grass and then vomited every day for years until it was put on a diet with more fibre. Then it stopped.
I suppose I could try a different brand of dogfood for mine. Or I could just let her eat grass since she's obviously regulating it herself quite well.

What does all that mean? It means that even though dietary fiber does not feed the cat herself, fiber is nonetheless essential for the health of the gut and therefore the health of the cat. There needs to be something in the diet that is not digestible and is not absorbable, that flows on to the gut bacteria waiting in the large intestine (aka the large bowel).

The phrase 'mucosal barrier functions' describes the necessary integrity of the gut wall, keeping it healthy and strong so what is being digested in the gut stays in the gut until it is ready to be absorbed into the body and so what does not belong stays out of the body and passes on out in the poop. The gut wall keeps gut bacteria in their place.
