I live in Minnesota and can confirm all these colloquial names. In the north I've heard them called bitter bass but in central we just call them mangos.

Bell peppers haven't arrived in the flyover states other than in certain cutting edge restaurants in Chicago's Wicker Park or Minnesota's North Lop district

In the vast unpopulated swaths of flyover America they still call yellow onions "Spanish" onions, and if someone is seen buying "Spanish" onions at the local Piggly Wiggly, their loyalty to the United States is immediately cast into doubt and the local pastor calls an emergency meeting, owing to lingering resentment over the sinking of the USS Maine.

Probably, if you were to present a midwestern a bell pepper, the more cultured among them would smile awkwardly and say they're allergic. The average specimen would instinctively making loud gagging noises and start raving about explosive diarrhea

Lol fake news. I haven't had a "bell pepper" personally but I do know people who have. They said it was fine if a little spicy. I would try one given the chance.
