Yes and no. Anyone who was out of college by about 2012 likely still prefers Jägermeister to Fireball. Any later, it's the opposite. After that it's a tossup whether they actually drink either.

For sure. If I am not in the mood for just Fernet I mix it with an equal amount of Campari for a Ferarri shot. One bar I worked at had Ferrari on tap with it's own menu to match, it was awesome.

Appleton's Estate rum is my drink of choice. If I wanna get drunk I mix it with coke and go through as much as I want. It's also nice to sip, especially the spiced version.

I graduated undergrad in 2007 and would pick Jager every day of the week over fireball, but I don't thing Jager was really even that big back then - it's just much better. Where I grew up in high school the meme drinks were Goldschläger and SoCo.

Sure, but Jäger and Fireball both fight for the same niche, and Fireball began to win it about 2012. Both are sold pretty exclusively in the setting where a variety of drinks are actually available legally and the idea of doing shots with a group is still appealing, i.e. college. People get in the habit of thinking one is much better by quite early in their drinking lives and keep preferring it forever. At least that's how it's been anytime I've cared to look.

anecdote: the one time I tried fireball was at an improv club house party because some out-of-place freshman girl blackout drunk off 4 shots of fireball on an empty stomach brought a bottle, so I jacked a shot while she was hazed out on the couch and mixed it with coke. Review: somehow increased the sweetness of the coke even though coke is witheringly sweet to begin with and just tasted like cinnamon

I like jager but I find it's best done 1:1 with good vodka (platinum 7x is my choice) to reduce the heavy sweetness, so I guess I should go deeper into anisettes and fernets (fernet branca was excellent when I tried it, also at aforementioned improv party)

Personally, I drink jager on ice either 1:1 with good vodka or with club soda since it's sweet enough for a full beverage and I'd rather not have competing flavors
