I have never tried them. I only know what they are, after it turned out that the doughnuts on Pokémon were not really doughnuts. Then, I found out that they were really onigiri. How would you describe this food, what is the taste?

>> No.10591765

>>10591751
It's just a rice ball. There's a hint of sour and bitter from the vinegar in the rice, but the taste mostly comes down to what, if anything, is inside of it.

While travelling in thailand, I made friends with a 19yo south african who was outside his country the first time in his life. He grew up in a small german town in the middle of the savannah so obviously, a lot of the food in thailand was new to him. We were pretty goddamn stoned one night and I convinced him to try an onigiri from a convenience store. I swear I saw his face change from curiosity to pure delight in slow motion as he took his first bite. It was the purest display of joy I've ever seen in anyone above the age of 7.

I went through High School years in Thailand, and grabbed onigiri at a family mart almost evey morning when I was in a rush. They're not all that special really, its just sushi rice stuffed with meat or some other shit, covered in sea weed. Cheap though, it's similar to a new yorker grabbing a stuffed pretzel or some bullshit stuffed pastry before work. It's not meant to be a culinary delight, but more as a gibbie my shit i gots to go kind of thing.

Bread is becoming quite popular as a breakfast meal. On a flight to Japan, I met a Japanese cook who had gone to France to study cooking and was returning to work at a high class bakery in Tokyo. He told me the older generation normally will prefer to stick to natto for breakfast, but the youngsters love the sandwiches and toast.

Yes I have.
Yaki onigiri, which is just a grilled or toasted riceball is a good snack.

Most of the time, you'll eat them filled with something, very rarely will you be seeved or given ones that are plain rice and nori.

The best mainland japan variety is probably pollock roe, which is basically spicy fish eggs.

Okinawa (and hawaii I guess) has pork/Spam and egg onigiri, usually with tuna or shrimp mayo, that one is probably my favorite. You can get them all over mainland, however. Pic related. Some food stands are popping up that make enormous ones with thick slices of fried spam and scrambled eggs with other shit added, like other vegetables or real bacon.

And then another one I always get is Kimchi onigiri, especially if I have no time and need to get something to eat during a drive.

Onigiri is usually eaten warm, so convenience store clerks will ask if you want yours microwaved for 20-30 seconds while they ring you up.

I miss fresh, cheap Japanese food.

I think I'm going to go to the Asian mart and make some unagi or something.
