I do prefer the longer chinese style with squared ends. what if I'm using a big bowl or something? I don't want half my utensil sitting in the broth, and having cylindrical ends is just silly if you're trying to grab something slippery, like most food, especially noodles.

just get some from a chinese restaurant (they usually will give you some for free if you order out) and practice with them.
basically the bottom stick is held with the middle part of your thumb's first joint and the first knuckle of your middle finger, this stick generally does not move.
the top stick is held between your thumb tip and index finger, like you're pinching it, this is the stick you use to clamp down on foods.

10595556

>>10595503
Lock the bottom one in so it stays still, leaving your thumb and first two fingers free to move the top one about like a pen. You shouldn't have to really clench the bottom one, it's more like it rests on the base of your first finger and the tip of your fourth, with the base of your thumb pressing between those two points to keep it stable.

Get a couple bowls and practice moving peanuts back and forth. You might cramp up if you're really not used to them, but you'll figure out a more relaxed grip soon enough.

If you're determined to have metal utensils but don't want to actually taste metal, one of the few reasonable choices is actually gold. It's fairly inert in terms of its interaction with your taste receptors.

Pure gold's one of the softest metals. The typical hard and dense gold ingots you're probably thinking about are mixed with other metals like silver and zinc. That's also why you have karats when it comes to gold. 24-karat or 24k is pure gold, while the smaller numbers just basically mean that there's a higher gold:other-metal ratio.
