I miss Jeff Smith.

His style was almost inimitable. The constant focus on flavor and presentation, rather than haughty ingredients should be emulated.

Who you miss, /ck/?

I miss the 1980s public television show from rural virginia that was filmed live and unedited with no cuts.

Not trying to be a smart ass, but what kind of food does one cook in rural Virginia on PBS? Are we talking home comfort stuff? Squirrel stew?

They cooked whatever recipes viewers sent in. This resulted in highly mixed results in the finished products. The honesty when the food sucked was refreshing.

I read the article you linked. Which I should have done before asking my question. Sounds like a great show.

Will look for YouTube stuff on these guys. Thanks.

I hope the sexual misconduct allegations weren't true. Jeff seemed like a cool dude.

Agreed. From the sound (read) of it, people loved him or hated him. I of course have no idea which is closer to the truth. But I loved his show. I was in undergrad in the late 80s, and my roommates and I tried to outdo each other with his recipes.

RIP Jeff.

His voice kinda grated, too squeaky. But he taught cooking well.

Martin Yan was a lot more fun to watch, especially his "how to part out a chicken" comedy routine. Vidrelated:

No they were true. Craig Wollam his ass-istant was his boyfriend.

It was like the Bill Cosby case, over 20 boys accused him and he just paid them off.

I miss Batali when he was doing Molto Mario. I learned a lot about Italian cuisine from that and he was yet to be the pretentious sellout fag he became on that abominable The Chew.

The Galloping Gourmet. It was interesting since he would take classic high fat dishes and cook it with much less fat. However, he was annoying since like most brits he pranced around like a mincing faggot who had been cornholed 1 too many times.

He was pretty special. He was a big influence. I bought at least 3 of his cookbooks.

The books on 3 ancient cuisines, chinese, greek, rome...and the differences in the soup stocks with regards to "the pot", ROFL all his interest in history and background.

I think maybe it was simply assumed guilt because his attorneys and insurance company settled prior to the civil suit going to court, which was something done at the time to protect parent companies, not just him.
There were never any provable legal charges, only civil suit claims. I think it was a scheme to make money and the reason I think that is when you read the actual public record lawsuit, the claimants talk about learning about their abuse years later at the time of lawsuit (blocked memories at the age of 17?), and how it contributed to their ongoing behavior and permanent mental problems they had before they met him. Hrm. Some of the young men worked for him through two decades, which is just something you wouldn't do with a caterer who made you uncomfortable at least.

One interesting fact, was that according to the civil lawsuit document, Jeff and his wife Patti had a marriage that had ended 20 years previously, though not officially. That kind of speaks at least some level of dishonesty, but it'd be their business if they stayed together for the kids only.

He could have been gay. I think at that point in history, it was the definition of taboo. I do find it odd that his business was as much cooking as being a chaplain, so I find it kind of unbelievable where they claimed he went to sex parties and risked his public persona. The whole thing seems like there could have been many many people not covered by hush agreements that could have talked in the time, given the extent of these allegations to be witnessed by others, relatives of Jeff, relatives of the supposed victims to corroborate some fishy "where were you?" stories, other employees, people at parties, any sense, and yet not one memoir or interview out there to be found.
