Pepsi started advertised to black markets in the late 1940s, way ahead of Coca-Cola. I think the reason Coca-Cola advertises Sprite so heavily to black and urban demographics is because they started to realize the market share lost to their biggest competitor. Pepsi seems to have moved their advertising away from that. Especially after the backlash from that Kendall Jenner commercial I think Pepsi will steer away from trying to evoke any racial tones in advertisements for the next few years.
