I might be wrong, but it always seem to me that the people in this picture are usually poor/lower middle class. Still, it brings so much despair to me when I see someone celebrating their birthday alone, or with parents that seem uncaring; forced to be there due to moral law. Some of these look pretty normal to me. When I was in college I would celebrate my birthday with friends, but then when I came home I would have cupcakes or something with just my parents to celebrate with them. I don't think most people past 15 have birthday parties that include both their friends and parents.

For some reason this reminded me of that story of the mom who threw a birthday party for her nerdy son. They had family and the boys friends at the party and the mother hired strippers to show up. She assumed that if she did that then he would become interested in getting a girlfriend. There are pictures of it, I wish I had saved them. You'd be surprised. I used to hate them to, until my mom saved one (or at least a mix, not 100% sure) from a ditch and she's the most chill dog ever. Content to lounge on a lap all day, never barks, never pees inside, knows how to sit in a chair like a person with her paws against the edge of the table. Can eat patiently and calmly from a fucking fork while doing so. Will hear your ass hit the mattress from a mile away, that's the only time she ever gets excited; will scramble across the house, jump onto the bed, claw at the covers until she can get in and then curl up against your stomach. Her tail's got no hair because of the state we found her in, but otherwise she's fine. Best dog ever.

My mom actually paid my classmates to show up to my 8th grade birthday party. I only had a few friends and she was probably afraid I would end up like one of the kids in these pics, I've never had the heart to tell her that I know and I don't think I ever will, but I have no love for anyone else on this planet like I have for my mother as a result of it.
