The chances of slipping into alcoholism are way too high. It’s not worth it and if op reproduces it also increases the chance of passing on alcoholism to future generations.
Just don’t do it.
Go look at people hanging out at bars.
They’re not generally there because they are happy. They are there because they are desperate for something missing from their lives but alcohol just makes it worse.
Alcohol takes the meaning out of relationships.
It’s not fucking worth it.

Lol I'm a reverse case, I always drank irish whiskey because it was most traditional (and scotch was out of my price range). Then scotch once I could afford it, and I finally decided to branch out to bourbon and rye (the latter is better imo, bourbon is too sweet but people vouch for it)
Overall, all the whiskey types are good with shit examples for every type in the sub $20 range (fuck jack daniels also)

The effects are divine. You get out of your own way. Your anxiety about speaking in public or talking to that girl? Gone. Your reluctance to start on that project? Gone.

Problem is if you're an asshole or fuck-up and just barely holding that in during your daily life. Under the influence of booze you won't fear to tell people what you really think of them and anything else. If you're holding in violence or anger, it'll come out when you're drunk. If you're trying to be reserved or stoic, the drink will let that out.

There's some trial and error involved, you're going to have to feel out how much impairment is the right amount for you. Too much and you'll be falling down drunk, which is fun until you hurt yourself or puke.

I suggest you start with beer / ale or wine, rather than hard alcohol. You'll have an easier time controlling how buzzed you are.

A few pointers, first of all do NOT drink because you want to be cool because that makes you an influentiable faggot
Try a few different cocktails, liquors, beers. Make notes of what you like and expand there (in moderation at first)
Like floral? Japanese whiskey and gin it is
Like sweet? Cocktails and cruisers it is
Like oaky? Scotch and bourbon
Like cocks in your ass? Vodka it is

Also if you're a lightweight then eat before drinking and remember that liquor takes just a bit before hitting you, so if you're already starting to feel bad you're not far from blacking out if you keep at it
First time bingeing should be with a trustworthy person

Anyways alcohol is fantastic for the right person, as with all good things in life do not abuse it until you're well acquainted with it

Most Americans under fifty are actually at a high risk for alcoholism because ever since they raised the drinking age to 21 in the 80s the only experience people have with alcohol before they're adults usually several years out of the house is underage binge drinking to show off to their friends in high school/college. Op, take a look at all the mental toddlers and fuckups ITT who make loud gagging noises at beverages that don't fall into the narrow scope of stuff that doesn't challenge them in any way, or use alcohol as an excuse to behave like terrible people. Now imagine yourself in a social setting or an "unofficial" work function that requires alcohol (if you live in the west or in asia it is guaranteed that occasional consumption of alcohol is a mandatory part of being accepted by your peers)

Being an awkward drinker, being an overdrinker, or having childish ideas about alcohol (eew I can't drink that, it's for girls! yuckee! I can't drink that it's too bitter! omg I can't drink that, it's pretentious! vomvom, I can't drink that it's for the poor!) is going to be a social handicap

When you're young it is ok to get sick once or twice and maybe look awkward. Get this done now. I'm not saying go get yourself arrested or go out of your way to be an idiot, but make mistakes, try stuff that seems "weird". Know what drinks are appropriate for which environments (dive bars, nice restaurants, etc)

You do not want to be that guy who makes everyone in the room turn around and start whispering just from ordering a drink, once you're past your mid 20s.

You also do not want to be that guy who makes everyone nervous when you're seen with a drink in your hand.

Or you could, you know, just not drink. I swear, you "social drinkers" are a bigger plague on society than actual alcoholics. You've already failed in life if what little camaraderie having a beer with your coworkers will net you is vital to your career goals or satisfaction with your work. The shit's expensive, both financially and in the physical toll it takes on the body, and even if somebody else is paying the monetary cost the drinker will always pay the physical cost. You're not going to shoot up heroin just to look like a bro in front of Joe from accounting. There's no reason to drink poison for the same reason.

Of course if you live in certain countries you have to be a "functioning" alcoholic to get anywhere in several fields, so this only applies if you live in the civilized world where alcoholism is treated as the disease it is.

not a poorfag, but I fucking hate rum. I only drink brown liquor except for tito's because its fucking good served cold.

Since rum is a pirate drink i just assumed they are a hodgepodge concoction of shitty ingredients

Nope brown rum is just spirits made from fermented sugar and aged in casks
It's pretty much sugar whiskey
The bad ones are the spiced rums like admiral and sailor and captain. Stay away from those. Do try stuff like flor de cana and mount fag. They are really nice for a hot day, I swear to god

I want my brother to get me a bottle of wl weller while he's in the states, since it's outrageously expensive here in upside down land. can anyone give me the name of a few bottle o shops in la or lv so I can search some prices. I've wanted to try a wheated bourbon for a while now that isn't makes mark. I'm also open to suggestions for something that's nice, neat or with ice

weller is overrated as fuck man. I bought 3 bottles because while I was traveling i saw em for sale so stocked up on it.

Only good quality is its price and thats it.

>Being an awkward drinker, being an overdrinker, or having childish ideas about alcohol ...is going to be a social handicap
This is the EXACT reason people drink whatever, thus continuing the recycling of garbage beers on a massive scale. People don't know anything about alcohol and think they should be able to drink by the time they're eighteen. Checked. But, fuck off.

Do you eat bad food? No, I bet you don't. Wise up, Anon.

Heh, I enjoy a good triple bock and dark porter, but I drink Busch Light precisely because it's the type of beer-water I like. Also, from experience being a booze hound sniffing out freebies at an industry convention, if it's served ice cold you don't have to care about the brand.

Yes unless you're a retard with no self control or discipline. Get a glencairn. Try some beginniners whiskeys. Learn how to smell and taste it. Most importantly get some friends who are also into it and you can have a great time.

If you literally haven't drank alcohol in your life, start with beer or some "soft" cocktails (rum and coke, gin and tonic, white russian, cosmopolitan, pina colada).

If you mean straight hard liquor, I'd try whiskey and dark rum, but there's a large chance it would leave a bad impression. Try tequila with all the gimmicks, use orange instead of lemon.

It can be a lot of fun, just don't make it something you do all the time. There are a lot of people for whom drinking is an inherently irresponsible act, and if you are one of them you should probably just avoid the stuff.
