I do a lot of hiking, and it dawned upon me the other day that stuffed onigiri may be the perfect trail food. The rice is calorie dense and you can stuff it with meat for your protein and vegetables for your other goodies. Take it out of the refrigerator before you leave and it will be good all day just wrapped in some plastic wrap.

What other hiking goods can even compare?
Trail mix plebs please no.

Hardboiled eggs are simple and delicious, and also double as convenient handwarmers

I think fruits make great hiking foods because you don't need to carry around a container for them. If people brought fruit to eat instead of trail mix and granola bars, there'd be a lot less litter on the trails.

I like to bring roasted chickpeas to snack on, with dates and other fruits.

That looks like it would not be good to carry, would it not get squished?

You need stuff like dried fruit, nuts, jerky, cheese, oats, peanut butter.

Based.

But if you're doing something like a thru-hike of one of the longer trails you just need maxmimum calories.

Um. Fats contain more calories than proteins or carbs, again suggesting that pemmican is superior.

My waifu was raised by her grandfather, an herbal medicine man in Korea, and he would go on 2 week long foraging expeditions in the mountains where he would literally only take stuffed rice balls for his food. So you're probably correct.

Personally I wouldn't wanna carry any non-dried meats around for a hike all day (unless it was in colder weather), but I agree: that would be a pretty good light trail meal.

For me, it's: mix of granola, dried cranberries, and nuts (usually almonds, cashews, and peanuts (to share with the pup)) and/or homemade beef or deer jerky. This, of course, all depends on the hike.

Anon, just because some cultures lack educational understanding about food safety and do things wrong out of tradition doesn't mean that you should do it too.

Rice is not something to be left at room temperature, period. You might still enjoy onigiri, but you should keep it cold. This is easily achieved by freezing a water bottle that you can then drink nice and frosty after a while.

Pickling is one way to preserve foods that can be consumed later after a while at room temp, from sausage to eggs to marinated salads, even salads that have grains. Adding a packet of tuna at the last moment adds your protein. Toss them in a jar or ziploc, then use ziploc to hold your napkin or whatever other waste when done. Whole fruit like avocados or tomatoes can be sliced and peeled and hit with some seasoned salt, squeeze of lemon and enjoyed, or pack them in a container with a vinaigrette.
