What's you're favorite bar like?

Mine is close by (within walking distance). Has affordable drinks. Decent food that is a step above typical bar food. Still feels like a beer & shot bar. On a first name basis with the owners and bartenders. Small enough for it to feel cozy. Know all the regulars and can always find someone to talk to when I go in. People don't put up with any bullshit. The regulars watch out for each other. Nearly all locals. Can be either a little slow, or super busy depending on the day and who is there.

Pic related. I spend wayyy too much money here.

This is my favourite pub.
It's not my local, it's about an hour drive away. Once a year me and my friends go camping near it and stop in for lunch and leave 10 hours later completely drunk and short on cash.
Has good food, local beers, and a nice view of the river.

Which bar?
I have 2 places. One is cheep as hell. And has great food for the price. Pitchers of beer are the cheapest around and if you want to be a cheep fuck they do a realy nice happy our of free fish and chips/wings/steak tips I live in the country a bit so the fact i can walk home is a BIG plus. The other place is my work bar. MUCH more expensive. Has the best steak in town. Bar tenders know me and even ask my opinion on beer before they order. Still get drunk with the previous owner and the brand new owner.

Narrow, about 2-3m wide, 10m long.
Only seating for 8, but on a busy night people squish in shoulder to shoulder and we get 30-40ppl in sometimes.
When it's summer proper buy beers and wander around on the street in front of it, but taxi drivers get annoyed when we block traffic.
Monthly special is a double shot of vodka or campari with whatever we have left in the back of the fridge for $4.
I was a customer there for years and recently got asked to help out on weekends. Staff get free drinks and we're usually wasted by 10, makes it hard to count change and remember orders sometimes.
Never seen a fight or heard a raised voice in like 6 years of going there.

Note, this only works for smaller bars and medium size bars maybe

So 'I've done this at probably 25 bars over the past 15 years in Nashville, Dallas, Daytona, and Richmond

For the first two weeks, go to the same bar 2-4 times a week for a couple of hours for 2 weeks and order the same drink every time. Occasionally make small talk w/ the bartenders and just eye contact/nods w/ folk who are regulars (you'll be able to spot them quickly)

After the end of two weeks, the bartender will almost always ask if you want your regular drink when you sit down. At this point, you can up the chit chat with the bartenders and by week 3, by proxy of the bartender, you will start to get included into conversations that the regulars have w/ the bartender.

After 10-12 weeks, you will be considered an "acquaintance regular" and it's up to you if you want to turn that it to a "true friend regular" which will take between another 4 weeks to half a year or so depending on the people and such

Souce: I'm a turbo autist who has managed to figure out how to make friends, but it is planned and methodical unlike how it comes naturally for most people.....but with that said, I have friends all over the country and can walk into many bars and people will be there asking me how I've been and we will all catch up

willing to answer any questions or give advice on how to be an /r9k/ level fag and actually make friends

also, to add to this. I have found that your biker bars and dive bars are more likely to quickly take you on as a friend even if you are an autist who wears poor fiting polos/dress shirts than a "trendy/chad" bar will...

I used to go to this autistic nerd bar where 90% of the patrons were either soyboys or unapproachable loud dykes, everyone played fucking magic the gathering, but if you sat at the bar, some interesting characters popped up once in a while. A shitty international/irish sportsbar/club that we only go to cause they've got the cheapest prices for beer before midnight, 2€ for a pint. There's tv's everywhere, barmen/women from ireland usually who only speak english, a decent selection of beer and a decent stout, a large dancefloor on the 2nd floor, used to have live bands play. The crowd's a mix of hostel backpackers on a bar hopping excursion, people who are there to see the match and get pissed, uni frats, nignogs/arabs, and randoms who want a cheap beer.

It's honestly obnoxious, but me and my friends are broke and we go hang out in front on the street tables and drink, smoke and shoot the shit away from the hustle inside. Been going there for so long we've lost count of the servers and bouncers we've known. There's the head barman who hasn't changed though and always serves us first.

This is all pretty good advice, but in my experience it doesn't even take that long. But essentially, that's how I became a regular at my bar. I typically always have a certain bar where everyone knows me wherever I have lived. It's nice, almost like a second home. I always know I can walk in on any night and be in the company of good friends. And now that I'm a respected regular, new people respect me and want to get to know me. It's like having a neighborhood living room where you can just pop in and have a conversation with whomever you see. I'd fucking live there if I could.

Mine closed down but it was the whole kitchen’s watering hole after work.

Pretty shitty dive.

One pool table, held up by a jack, free on tuesdays and Thursday. Regulars always played nine ball those days so games went quickly.

Only four bartenders and they knew us and our drinks and always had them poured by the time I had money out.

Cash only and only regulars could run tabs.

They made food but I’m sure it was terrible and came off a Sysco truck. My coworkers would always buy the prepackaged beef sticks and pickled eggs but I wouldn’t touch the stuff.

$2 domestic drafts. Super small bottle selection. $3 for most shots. Always got a round of tequila with wheels and then as many Budweiser’s as we were feeling.

Bartenders let us choose what was on the TVs.

Lots of regulars were also cooks and the regulars all knew us as the *insert restaurant name* crew. Bartenders and regulars got one or more of us out of a pinch multiple times.

So dark inside that even before dusk you would think it was night time if you were in there.

Still keep in contact with them. Shame it shut down.

Sounds like a nice place. I'm OP and I bet you would like my bar too. The bartenders/regulars/owners will always help each other out in a pinch, as I have many times before. They've even let me run a line of credit when I need to. And if someone tries to fuck with me at the bar, there will be a bunch if phone calls made and within 24 hrs everyone in the neighborhood will know, and that other guy will get fucked. It's nice knowing people who will have your back.

I once had a guy steal my laptop at the bar and the bar had it back within 24 hrs for me to pick up.

My favorite bar has since closed but it was great. It was in a college town so always busy unless it was mid week afternoon. They had 81 beers on tap that were rotated weekly, great food, and free popcorn. Would usually go 3 times a week and try all the new beers they would get in. Bartenders were nice and talk to you and knew a lot about the beer they were serving. No, you sit at a bar and chill while sipping a drink. If someone sits nearby and start talking about something you are good talking about you might try to throw in a sentence or two when you feel like your input might be interesting. If the people respond positively they might be okay with you joining the conversation.
Read their body language, are they changing their sitting positions to face a bit more towards you? If so then they want you to say more.

Sure, sometimes you might meet some people that will tell you to fuck off or something, and that's just an occupational hazard. Don't worry about it.

Whelp, now is your chance to not be a fucking wizard. Just go and have a drink. If someone strikes up a conversation and you have anything to add great. If not, don't be an awkward fuck. Keep your fucking phone in your pocket. Try to learn about a sport or 2.

What horrible advice. If someone doesn't have the slightest interest in sports and "learns" about them just to be able to talk to people that's gonna be horribly awkward and tiring for that person and ridiculously transparent for the other side.

Why do you have to jump to such extreme examples? Or right, because your argument is shit. There's plenty of things a single person is interested in, and you can always find some common ground with others without having to pretend to like things they do.

And even if you don't like something, a sport for example, you can still turn that into an advantage, since you can ask someone questions about their favourite sport and the will happily oblige you with a torrent of thoughts and facts. You can learn about it and have a conversation about it without having to pretend you are a fan yourself.

>>10478668
Nonsense. The standard topics also include:
- work
- taxes
- shopping
- movies
And once sufficiently drunk:
- societal ills

In general, if you are bad at talking focus on asking questions. People naturally like a good listener, and if that listener also asks good questions they are drawn to them even more. Everyone loves talking, anyone who enables that is a potential friend, and hell, you might even learn something interesting from time to time, since some people can be wise, if you get them to talk about things they know well.

And truth be told you are(as I am) not that interesting to begin with. So instead of struggling to say interesting things to push away by just a bit the awkward silence simply stop yourself and try asking some questions. It's a hard skill to master for some but the better you are at listening to others the better you will become at picking the right things to say at the right time.

This place in Oslo I like to go to whenever i'm in the center.

It's actually one of the better bars in Europe, the bartenders are nice and charismatic, other staff are very professional, they have a small nordic themed cocktail menu, despite being a higher end establishment their prices are very reasonable since they distill many of the spirits they use on-site.

If i'm not feeling cocktails they also have a cider garden and upstairs a tap-tail and beer bar.

as already mentioned, irish pubs are the comfiest; only competition are a few small (almost always half empty) pubs I've been to in Berlin

pic related is my favorite in Amsterdam, Mulligans Irish Music Bar
they have a tiny concert corner and you get all kinds of nice music there, and if the tv's are ever on, it's for the hurling championship
doesn't get overly busy, people are chill, no "partying" idiots
only downside is that it's not that cheap but then again nothing is in Amsterdam...a pint is like 5 or 6 euro
and I think it's actually a good thing that they don't serve food
afaik it was established by an irish lady and all barmen are irish, and lots of irish customers too

I'd say to make new ones, but bars haven't been for that since about 2013 or so

in fact, I distinctly remember, I went to basic in summer 2014, and before that, it was already hard, but passable. even on the one weekend free where I came back to town, it was iffy, but I chalk that up to a sudden change in scenery. but after that, it never got easier, everyone's on Tinder as a friend-making thing instead of a smashing service now, Meetup and Friendster have had resurgences, I think people just genuinely only make friends online these days. the era of the singles bar and random pool/darts/street fighter game are gone, replaced by what are essentially dating apps, so no one goes to a bar looking to meet people anymore

even my local gaming lounge, which used to have arcade cabinets loaded with fighting games and arcade classics but few or even no singleplayer games, it was a prime opportunity to meet people since you'd have to play necessarily 1v1 games, probably while drunk otherwise the proprietor would rightfully boot you for not being a paying customer, that shit is gone. they took out the cabinets, because people are unwilling to meet new people in pubs and lounges now. the culture has changed and it has definitely gotten harder to meet new people

even pool tables, places known for pool have started getting printed felt. it ruins the game of pool and anyone who wants to play pool won't play on those, but they're fantastic talking pieces for people already on dates.

some of them even think it doesn't affect their driving

however, if the place you're going to has a public transport connection to your home area, you can drive to the pub, get hammered, go home, and pick up your car the next day
some friends of mine do this if it fits their schedule for the next day

local circulation is only allowed if you're wasted, and you have sobering-up checkpoints attaching to on-ramps to the real highway. That way, the sober need to take the bus (which is more efficient) and no one will EVER even be allowed onto the autoroute in the first place unless they're cleared by breathalyzer.

Here we go, I've just solved all of transit forever. No need to thank me. :^)

But also, we import some finns to staff the driving schools, and more stringently uphold winter tire laws. So instead of being trained by indians who know all about fuel economy but nothing about weight transfer, every new driver comes out of their 1000$ course giving Colin McRae's zombie a run for his pounds-sterling.
