All memes aside, I decided to try soy milk for the first time today and it tasted pretty weird, it was more sweet and did not have fresh taste. So do any non-vegans actually prefer it to normal dairy milk?

Lactose intollerant people?

Yeah, I'm not and never have been a veg fag, but almond and rice milk is vastly superior to soy.

Soy milk taste varies. White people soy milk tastes weird as fuck. They like adding vanilla and all sorts of shit. I drink it instead of water sometimes. Milk is too heavy and odd for most meals.

Tastes like shit and makes my mouth dry for some reason.
I prefer oat milk, love that shit with Coffee

The sweetness is added. Unsweetened soy milk tastes like tofu (if it isn't obvious), it's a subtle beany taste you can barely get when you drink it cold.

What's the point of soy milk exactly? I know that some people claim its for "health reasons" yet the vast majority of brands (in the US anyway) are loaded with questionable additives. Seems like normal milk is far healthier.

idk, here in asia it's another flavored drink that's filling like milk but much cheaper. When I'm eating on a budget i'd order a smaller meal and a glass of soya milk so I won't feel hungry later on.

Opposite in the US. It's more costly than milk because it's marketed as an exotic health food.

Actually informed opinion here:

100% of soy milks sold in western grocery stores are garbage. Pretty much the only way to get decent soy milk is to find a place that makes their own, fresh every day. Check your local chinatown. You could also make it yourself, it's not that hard. Same goes with tofu. Most non-Chinese people have never had real soy milk.

It's like the tofu and soy milk sold in western supermarkets aren't even the same food.

Superficially, fresh soy milk is usually much thinner and tastes...fresher and more like soy. One of the downsides is it doesn't last that long because there are no preservatives compared to supermarket soy milk. Ditto with tofu, but I think the difference is even bigger with tofu (compare the difference between the tofu you get in asian restaurants vs. from the supermarket).

Not really sure how to explain it, try https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1HHx93EBLE.. Tofu is just a few more steps but you probably want the mold for that.

I can't speak for soy milk, but I certainly agree that all the tofu I've ever bought in the states has been crap compared to what I've had in Asia. I've tried every brand I could find and they have all sucked by comparison.

Thankfully anon is right and it is easy to make your own tofu. If you are interested I suggest the book Asian Tofu by Andrea Nguyen.

Trying to eat plant-based for health reasons. Used to drink cow milk all the time.

Soy milk imo does taste better than cow milk. No aftertaste that lingers in my mouth and makes my breath stink.

Have tried rice, oat, almond, hemp, goat, and cow milk. Soy tastes best to me.
