Cigarettes used to have much better tobacco and less filler (tobacco in general used to be better quality). Many of the ones he smokes were made before modern manufacturing methods (nowadays, cigarettes are made by basically stewing the tobacco, sucking out the juices, adding in filling and other chemicals mandated by law, etc and then spraying it back onto the tobacco/filler pulp).
