I lurked for a little bit hoping to find a thread that could solve my problems, but it doesn't seem to exist. I've never cooked before in my life, although I've tried baking with horrendous results and I really want to learn. It's essential for me so that I can survive college, but I don't even know where to start.
Is there some kind of link?
Or maybe some kind of book?

Please help me out here

You want to sear the steak on the pan or grill, then finish it in the oven.

You want to learn the basics.
Rice. Beans. Lentils. Pasta. Oatmeal. Easy stuff, you just need to know how to boil water to cook this.

You want to learn techniques. Boiling, steaming, frying, baking. You can cook stuff multiple ways. You can fry potatoes. You can boil potatoes. You can bake potatoes. The ingredients don't matter, the techniques are how you really cook.

Some easy dishes: pasta with a sauce, chicken and rice, chicken and vegetable stir fry, beef and lentil stew.

Eggs. You can poach, boil, scramble, fry, etc and they're cheap. Good to start learning temperature control.

Start with Alton Brown. He has a TV show called Good Eats and a series of books called "I'm Just Here for the Food"
The reason he's a good place to start is that he's not a bad boy chef or snotty gourmet. He's a nerd who wanted to teach other nerds how to cook. He's really good at explaining the hows and whys of cooking and doesn't just throw recipes at the audience.

Lots of gadgets and gimmicks on his show though, take that as entertainment value. People reee over it but I like him. Not his Lasagna recipe though, fuck that

Probably the best episodes of Good Eats for a nooblet are the Pantry Raid ones, because it's all about basic ingredients and techniques.

Shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it

this guy is stupid and should be ignored. Different steaks are cooked differently.

what are you having trouble with, OP?

>> No.10380420

Start out with breakfast foods OP. Once you're comfortable cooking things like pancakes, omelettes, eggs and oatmeal you'll at least have a foundation to start with.

Start with potatoes.
Potatoes are cheap and versatile. Nearly every basic cooking technique can be applied to a potato. And if you screw up, you've only ruined a cheap potato and not an expensive steak.
