How are you supposed to drink "fine" whiskey?

>> No.10355190

from a glass, if you have one

mixed with store brand diet cola.

>> No.10355203

Drink it straight, temperature does not matter when you just take tiny sips to get the most out of its flavor.
With cola if you are alone and want to get drunk fast.

However you like it. Don't buy into pretension about the "proper" way.

Neat is fine. I will usually drink it straight, and add a couple drops of water to slightly dilute the alcohol burn and allow for more flavour to come through.

The "Japanese highball" is pretty good too. Its basically just two ounces of whisky in a chilled, ice filled tall glass, add 4 to 6 ounces or so of good soda water, then stir slowly.

If you want to mix it with juice or pop, you do you.

That's like saying the best car to learn on is one with 800 horsepower and a roll cage.

I would have them try something on the lighter inexpensive side like Glenlivet or Glenfiddich as an absolute baseline to see if they even will enjoy scotch, then start to introduce more powerful, peat heavier whiskys from there.

I actually strongly disagree. It is common to recommend unpeated or weakly peated whiskies for beginners, but I think there's nothing wrong with showing people the deep end and allowing them to decide their own preferences. Laphroaig 10 was the third scotch I've ever tried, and it's what got me into them in general.

Peat doesn't need to be slowly introduced. If you like it, you'll like it. If you like a little, you'll like a little. If you don't like it, you don't.

I tend to agree with this, but I do feel if you want to mix it / make a cocktail from it then you won't taste the subtle differences between a really nice whisky and a fairly average one, so you are as well mixing an average one and drinking the nice one neat.
I'd say pour a measure into a glass, take a sip, then add a little fresh water a few drops at a time until the burn goes away but you retain the flavour. Some people like ice, but I think it dulls the flavour compared to water, but by all means give it a go and see what you like.
