What's essential stuff I should buy off the bat in bulk if I want to make low-effort but good-tasting meals en masse and keep eating the leftovers? I eat fast food or restaurant food almost every day now and want to cut back because it's a waste of money.

Think of beans, any family value meats like stew beef or chicken thighs. Rice of course, barley is cheap and if you make really good stock you can risotto the barley and it's super tasty for a little effort and pennies on the dollar

Stock up on rice, pasta, instant mashed potato powder, milk, beans, eggs, lentils. Also vegetables and fruit like apples, onions, garlic, leeks, celeriac, carrots

I know right? I save these just for threads like this as a general infograph of shit everyone should know. Save them and pass it along to anyone else that doesn't know is the best I can say

Are you fucking kidding? This sounds like a narrow minded fast track for disappointment and wasted ingredients. Probably shitty cooking too.

Listen, OP, cooking is not hard, it's just about combining the right ingredients in the right propositions, but it's not going to make any sense for a while what that means exactly.

Go to cy.tube and search "food" and watch some shows, learn about food you want to make.

Make a "wish list" of recipes. Don't go crazy; be like "I wanna try mac n cheese and make it well" and do a google of "simple and tasty mac cheese". Look through a few recipes and choose one that you feel the most comfortable executing on; don't be too fancy the first time

Do this 500 times for any combination of recipes and you wont need to look up recipes anymore.

PS first time, follow the fucking recipes to a T...especially with regards to timing. If you fuck it up, try again until you do it right. Then do it right 10 times. Then you will be good.

*Don't be too fancy but use ingredients and cooking methods you may not be familiar with.

"Pushing the envelope" is integral to growth in any field. Cooking is a very safe a personal space to explore your limits.

To answer your question directly re: bulk items, plan on shopping 3 times a week.

Canned tomatoes, dried/canned beans and rice are your only preservable staples; meanwhile, they are the basis for mot of my cooking.

I keep 2 lbs of dried beans (1 white 1 black), ~60 oz canned tomatoes (mostly diced or crushed; at least 1X10 oz sauce for pizza, maybe a smoked or chile-mixed can) and at least a pound of long grain white rice (cookes up to 2.,5)
