I just finished this bottle and found it quite nice. It is not cheap in my country, actually it's twice the price of JD but definitely twice the quality too. Have you tasted it anon? Also, WHISKEY GENERAL

You can't even compare this to the swill that is JD, man.
Glenfiddich, the "normal" one, is what I usually recommend to people who want to get into whisky for the first time time. It's smooth and inoffensive and all-round easy to enjoy neat.
The 12 is better but newbies often don't want to spend too much on their first bottle.

Laphroaig 10 and Quarter Cask is what I like best myself but you can't start people on those.

Technically, Jack Daniel's COULD be a legit bourbon but its makers have staten their product is not intended to be so: “We objected and used the fact that our whiskey is different and ‘doesn’t have the characteristics of a bourbon.’”. You could say it is more like a "bourbon-style whiskey", but not a bourbon by definition. Please check out the given links:

No scotch can compare to a good bourbon. I've tried them all. Scotch is for people who don't like the taste of liquor and prefer to have a mild flavor. I have the opposite Problem. I wanna sample various things, so I have a lot of bottles, but it's not that often that I'm in a liquor mood, and when I have friends over, it's mostly beer anyways, so the bottles just accumulate and start to oxydise.
Currently got a Speyburn 10 that's close to 2 years old and a Laphroig QC at about 3/4 of a year (and a lot of non whiskey bottles ranging from 2 months to 3 years).

Does anyone have a good reason to buy expensive liquor. I understand that you may prefer the flavor, but I feel like its a insignificant reason. It gives the same result in the end. And honestly, none of it tastes really good. I've been drinking for about 15 years. I just buy cheap shit because it feels the same, and in some cases I've found the more expensive ones to taste more offensive. I don't drink for the hip flavor hints you smack your tongue to trying to find somewhere in the mix. I just drink to feel that little bit of euphoria it provides.

Drop a little bit of water into the whisky. It will tame the harshness of it and will open up a few flavors that are otherwise overpowered by the alcohol. As you get more accustomed to it, you may find yourself adding less water as time goes on.

Eh, I'm not a fan of the school of "graduating" into whisky. You don't need "training wheel" scotches to start enjoying the finer stuff. It's more about knowing what to experience when drinking it (nosing, palate, finish) that allows one to become a connoisseur of sorts.

By the time he finishes the Glenlivet 18, he's going to have a much different appreciation for it than when he began. Unless he guzzles the thing down like an alcoholic. Then I would direct him to the other thread.

Ok, so I've had a couple of glasses of this now and I'm still not sure what I think about it. It's made using rye in the mash which has given it a really heavy rye taste, which I've not had before in a bottle I've bought myself before. It's one thing to have a single of a rye whiskey in the pub, another to be drinking it start to finish at home.
That being said the more I drink the more I'm getting used to the taste, but that could be owed to the drinks.
What does it actually taste like? Really bready or grainy like I'm breathing inside a grain silo. It's also pretty sour. It's 40% so not overpowering, which means you can really taste everything. If you do like rye whiskey I guess this would come recommended.
Overall at £30 I won buy it again. But I'm also not NOT going to drink it, because well, that's £30.

You really shouldn't have bought such a strong bottle for a first. Especially single malt scotch.
Try bourbon, since its mostly corn its gonna be sweeter. Bulleit is a good starting point.

Aside from this glenlivet 18 is actually a great bottle. you should keep it. A year from now try it again, itll be dank as fuck.

Different anon, but I moved out of PDX a decade ago and the only place I could think of that I ever went to that could be considered a whiskey bar was the Horse Brass, which I only ever went to because it was right next to Movie Madness, and looking at their website now they have a pretty shitty selection of whiskey. I lived in Chicago for a couple of years and probably went to a dozen places with much better whiskey selections.

But 'Tennessee whiskey' is defined as straight bourbon produced in that state by most legal definitions of the term, since the production/quality requirements are more or less identical. Even the distinction applied by Tennessee law specifying the Lincoln County Process makes an exception for Benjamin Prichard's, and most 'genuine' bourbons use similar charcoal-filtering techniques pre-bottling anyway to remove visual impurities, which further debases that qualification (and makes the 1941 IRS letter highly suspect).

Thus, the distinction is effectively geographical and a marketing ploy, nothing more; if you made a whiskey identical to JD in Kentucky, you have zero reason not to call it 'bourbon'.

Not that guy, but charring oak DOES impart a sweet taste to the whiskey aged inside because it breaks down hemicellulose to produce wood-sugars which caramelise the barrel interior. It also breaks down and alters the balance of other wood chemicals which ultimately changes their degree of reaction with the whiskey and produces characteristic flavour notes.

https://gizmodo.com/how-bourbon-gets-its-beautiful-flavor-1461041832

https://vinepair.com/wine-blog/what-are-barrel-char-levels-and-how-do-they-affect-the-way-my-whiskey-tastes/

And while it's tempting to assume that the higher sweetness of corn produces sweeter whiskey, glucose's boiling point is too high to be boiled off in distillation, so distillate from any kind of mash is mostly alcohol solution (as expected). No mash can defy the laws of physics and chemistry.

>asks if its good

There's three things that go into whether or not something is "good": availability, taste, price.
If its available everywhere then you won't exactly care if you run out or someone else drinks it. But if it's a bit rare or harder to find then you'll appreciate it more whenever you have it.

Then there's taste. If its good, then it's good. No other way to say it. This is the most important part. No use spending up to hundreds for a bottle you dont even like. Even if it's available everywhere, or rare af.

Then theres the real shit. The part with controversy. Some bottles go up to the thousands of dollars for no reason other than for the meme. Although these prices are usually second market, some stores adopt these prices as well.
But if you like a bottle and you like its price then by god, its a dank bottle.

True. But Taste can be subjective, this is my first time owning one, but I might like it because I have poor taste and not knowing if I'm really enjoying whisky or the taste if this bottle.
