I walked through the nearby mall today for shits and giggles. Over a quarter of the space had nothing in it, a lot of the shops had restricted hours, the Dilliards is closing down and has turned into an outlet center where they’re trying to get rid of all their inventory and is also now only one floor, and the only place that seems to have any regular business is the food court and the movie theater.

It’s a little strange to see something that was so ubiquitous growing up dying a slow painful death.

What is the nature of the "heh"? Is it just a form of slight acknowledgement through quick oral expulsion of air?
Or does it have a sarcastic undertone to it?
It occurs to me that sometimes the "heh" can be rather low-tempo and downtrodden, is that another form of acknowledgement, in this case of something the one "heh"-ing perceives as negative? Or is it just an advanced form of the "sigh" which shares a lot of traits particular to the negatively intonated "heh"?

its an abbreviated laugh, dumbass. obviously you aren't lol-ing out loud when you do it, but you still want to acknowledge something. and like any other word or phrase it can be inflected sarcastically. if you slow it down it's more of a sigh. but, again, you can say just about anything in a forlorn, breathy tone, so then it's just a sad abbreviated laugh.

>> No.10208380

>>10208338
It's not an abbreviated laugh as that would mean you are trying to express some form of joy/madness or any other emotion normally expressed by laughing

Using joy as an example, it's a much greater emotion than what is displayed by simply utilizing a "heh" to express yourself.

You don't laugh to acknowledge someone/something and you don't "heh" to actually express some emotion, it's simply a way to connect between the acknowledging of that emotion and the actual expression that follows afterward

"hehehehe" giggling/chuckling is a way of expressing entertainment and laughing, too. not a boisterous HAHAHA laugh, sure. but it is still a laugh.

it's analogous to a "HA!" as in "HA! I got you (and i find that funny)"

but instead it's "heh" as in "Heh. that was pretty good (and i found it amusing, but not necessarily hilarious)"

ultimately it's probably used mostly as an expression of acknowledgement that you heard and interpreted somebody else so they don't feel ignored/unheard. a courtesy to a lame joke, if you will.

I think it really depends on the area which the mall is at and the convenience of getting to that mall. Ever since this one mall in my city was built all the other old ass malls died quickly because getting to them was a chore and all the stores were at the new one. There's this one mall that seems to be stuck in the 90s with generic named stores and a food court that smells like Burger King. Even has a black light bowling alley/movie theater. Probably more of a response to people relocating to the suburbs where there is more land to build on so you aren't limited to just having large department stores. Plus to have a shopping district like in the big cities you would need to build it and most towns would be too small to turn main street into one. Also the affluence of post-WW2 America from being the only developed country left standing and unblemished helped spur on development.

The vast “expansion” of the “modern” type of shopping mall happenned during the start of the cold war.
“Mall construction in America was encouraged by the accelerated depreciation laws of 1954, which incentivized greenfield development on the urban fringe. A second stimulus came from legislation passed in 1960, which allowed investors to band together in REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts) to avoid corporate income taxes.”
^A change in federal legislation helped spur the growth of malls.
“The fully enclosed shopping mall did not appear until the mid-1950s.”
“The idea of a regionally-sized, fully enclosed shopping complex was pioneered in 1956 by the Austrian-born architect and American immigrant Victor Gruen.”
“In the United States, in the mid-1990s, malls were still being constructed at a rate of 140 a year. But in 2001, a PricewaterhouseCoopers study found that underperforming and vacant malls, known as "greyfield" and "dead mall" estates, were an emerging problem.”

“The Cold War was a state of geopolitical tension after World War II between powers in the Eastern Bloc (the Soviet Union and its satellite states) and powers in the Western Bloc (the United States, its NATO allies and others). Historians do not fully agree on the dates, but a common timeframe is the period between 1947, the year the Truman Doctrine, a U.S. foreign policy pledging to aid nations threatened by Soviet expansionism, was announced, and either 1989, when communism fell in Eastern Europe, or 1991, when the Soviet Union collapsed.”

Enclosed malls started to be built within ten years of the dropping of the bomb on Hiroshima, and the start of the cold war, and ended within ten years of the general end of the cold war.
“ Brutalist architecture flourished from the 1950s to the mid-1970s, descending from the modernist architectural movement of the early 20th century.“
“Brutalism became popular with governmental and institutional clients, with numerous examples in English-speaking countries (the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia), Western Europe (France, Germany, Italy), the Soviet Union, the Eastern Bloc”
“Examples are typically massive in character (even when not large), fortress-like, with a predominance of exposed concrete construction,”
“Brutalism became popular for educational buildings (especially university buildings),”
“Brutalism became favoured for many government projects, tower blocks (high-rise housing), and shopping centres.”
Brutalism started around the same period, and was popular in countries that were involved in the cold war, or stuck between the major powers.

Brutalist architecture looked like bomb shelters essentially because it was designed as bomb shelters. This is the reason it was used for goverment buildings, archives, communication hubs, and college campus buildings which in many cases were located at colleges and universities with major science and technology departments. Enclosed malls started to be built during the same time period, in a similar architectural style, with few windows, large parking lots, and insude open spaces for concerts or other large assemblies, playgrounds, fountains, plants, pretty much everything you might need if you had to hunker down inside for a while to avoid domething like nuclear fallout.
In major cities, enclosed malls were also constructed similarly, but connected to underground transportation systems like subways. These same subways in many cases also connect to goverment buildings, and transportation hubs. I know that many also had nuclear shelters in them.

When I was younger and my mom would be gone on a work trip, my dad would make me cook him dinner while he drank whiskey. For a lot of it I was really young, like 8 or something, so I would often fuck up the food then he would scream at me and whip me with a belt till I cried. Now I'm terrified of cooking

Actually, 9 or 10 out of 10 is quick fuck material. You want somewhere from 6 to 8 for long term relationships with the hope of marriage. Easy on the eye without being so desirable that they never had to develop a personality.

Unfortunately, lonely nerds treating this particular 7/10 as a 10/10 has probably ruined her personality.

They had to put up a lot of buildings in a short period because of a burgeoning society and population explosion so that meant simple, functional over aesthetic structures. You are seeing what you want to see when you characterize all of them as fortress-like and nuclear shelters.

Eastland mall in Charlotte N.C. Was nice
Three story mall
Ice skating rink was 1st floor in middle of mall
Huge arcade, last mall arcade I have seen
Then the low income government housing popped up all around it
“They” started coming to the mall in huge packs
Shoplifting was out of control
Brawls in the very nice food court
Robberies
Shootings
My mom stopped taking me and my brother
Most smart white people stopped going
Police there multiple times per day
Police were attacked
Businesses loses
Finally the mall closed and sits in a pile of rubble to keep the junkies and homeless out

RIP

In Huntsville alabama, they bulldozed an old, decrepit, derelict, shopping mall, (was over 140 acres with parking lot included) and build an entire subdivision, with houses, apartments, shops, and a park/green space. Much better use of land and added to the productive tax base,
