How did Starbucks convince people that drinking a 2000 calorie milkshake for breakfast is not only normal, but good?

I can't help but cringe when I see my co-workers walking in with these, they are fucking killing themselves

How did Starbucks convince people to think a 2000 Cal milkshake with half a teaspoon of instant coffee is a healthy beverage?
I worked there a few years ago, people literally thought they were healthy because they coffee (usually they were already obese)

Simply an anecdote here but a lot of people (specifically women and older people) seem to think that liquid calories just aren't a thing. You know the types - "I had a healthy lunch: a garden salad with a grilled, skinless chicken breast and a large iced tea! Oh and then in the afternoon I had another iced tea because it's hot out lol." Mom mother is like this and I finally got her to stop being a fool regarding liquid calories. On weekends it was very typical for her to go out in the morning to Tim Horton's and get an extra large French vanilla cappuccino and also a large Ice Capp to put in the fridge for later: total calories are about 800 and probably around 80g of sugar. My family is generally like this and it's the luck of the genes that none of these people have gotten the 'beetus.

For many people, the difference between losing weight and maintaining their current weight is a single 700 calorie coffee milkshake bomb for breakfast.

Everyone could be a healthy weight if they just skipped out on one less meal and cut out all liquid calories, especially soda.

I mean, it is if you have a job. You can eat pretty well on 15 a day, if you had the money why wouldn't you? I'm pretty poor, so I like to spend as little as possible on food, then cook one or two really good meals a week. Now I can't even look at one without realizing how fucking deadly it is to me. A tall frappe has about 90 carbs in it, and thats at base without added cream, pumps of syrup, or specialty milks.

Its all in the syrup. The coffee itself is 0, the milk can be fat-free or low cal 1%, but that syrup carries the entire 90+ carbs in it, and its required as a binding agent to make the frappe. A caramel one is double that, and a venti size is like 3X the amount.

I find it really amusing how if you bash McDonalds on /ck/ you're some kind of elitist who wants to kill white people, but if you bash Starbucks you're a brave freethinker. It's the exact same shit, nobody eats McDonalds every day thinking it's health food, and nobody gets a sugary coffee drink at Starbucks thinking it's going to turn them into Alysson Stokke

This. What the fuck do you think Diabetes is? Its not fat disease. it happens when you give your body too much sugar that it overloads it. Whether you are skinny or fat is irrelevant, you are going to destroy your body and make yourself insulin dependant. Don't do it man.

Just so you know, the amount of energy to bring it to body temperature is pretty much negligible. It's true that it requires some energy to heat but it's nowhere near the amount of energy it contains. For scale, a calorie is defined as:
>the approximate amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of onegramof water by one degreeCelsiusat a pressure of oneatmosphere
On foodstuffs, when we say calorie we're generally actually talking about kilocalories. I'm not sure why some asshat decided this confusing convention should be the standard but that's how it is. So your 800 calorie frappshake is actually 800 kilocalories which means you gain enough energy to heat 800,000 grams of water by 1 degree Celsius at one atm of pressure. Or 800 kilograms of water if you prefer. You only need to raise the temperature of this thing by less than 37 degrees Celsius. Let's just assume that the milkuccino is equivalent to a kilogram of water, for simplicity's sake. Then you use 37 kilocalories to bring it to body temperature. So congratulations, you still gained 763 kilocalories and I'm still probably overestimating the the necessary energy by a significant amount. It heats the whole time you're drinking it and it probably takes less energy to heat than a kilogram of water.

Technically complex carbs aren't sugar. They do break down into sugars generally though. So what I'm trying to say is that technically your first statement is wrong.

Sugar refers to monosaccharides and disaccharides. Complex carbs refers to oligosaccharides and polysaccharides which are either undigestible or break down into sugars.
