My mother always cooked juuust enough for us to eat, and as a result she tried to only cook things people wouldn't hate, although she was incredibly bad at taking hints so you could eat something ten times over the course of a year and be told repeatedly that it is your most favorite dish, no matter how many times you've claimed to dislike it. If you didn't want it, there was never anything else available to eat. I was never especially picky, my older brother a bit more than me, but if we ever didn't seem to want something our dad would loudly and harshly mock us until we ate it, often shoving it in our faces until we ate whatever he was holding.

And yes, my mother is very dense about pretty much everything and tends to make just assume things about the family. My dad also acts like that about everything, but gets violent if you don't like his "jokes.". Sometimes he will get violent if he hears talking in the kitchen, assuming it to be an argument, even if it is a casual discussion with my mother about the weather.
