We have grilled cheese in Italy and while we have American cheese (not even called "cheese" but rather "sottilette" which means "thin thingies"), we don't use it for our sandwiches. Rather, we use whatever cheese is most popular for that purpose locally.
We also have cheese cutlet sandwiches, which are better, IMO. Pic related. It's a cheese cutlet sandwich.
