So, ck, I come to you with a small problem I've encountered.

I took one cup of white rice, some small dice onion, carrot, and celery (about 1/5th of a cup of each), and cooked this up in three cups of chicken stock with some diced cooked ham.

Stock was brought to a boil, rice veggie and meat added, and then it was brought back up to a boil, then reduced to a simmer. Covered it, ended up cooking it for a full hour (directions said 35; I cooked it 15 more, periodically checking, because of my problem, before giving up).

So, here's the problem. Most of the rice cooked up just fine. However, it seems like 1 in 10 grains are completely uncooked. How in the hell did this happen, and how do I avoid another problem like this in the future?
