Holy crap that example is fucking shit. McDonald's has a fucking laundry list of innovations that have been discontinued or failed outright. They've done pizzas and spaghettis, and for a while did snack wraps that were dope as fuck.

Better example is In-N-Out, which emphasizes core competencies over diversification to drive business. They make only burgers, fries, milkshakes, and offer soda. That's it. They streamline the fuck out of everything and train their employees to be perfectionists of a specific task while paying decently. It's why everything is amazing there even though Five Guys costs three times as much and offers a worse experience.

Honestly, this is probably a good thing. Taco Bell needs to revisit some of their classic items. Enchiritos, volcano items, shit that generated interest. They could easily simply or overhaul thier menu and make a killing.

Also know that there's a mental component to it too. You have to eat foods you like, and you have to understand that results are not next day or instantaneous, which is fucking frustrating. There's also days where life happens and you don't meet your goals. You just have to get back on the wagon and keep riding.
