> everyone whos harping on 300lb 40% BF fatty keeps saying the carbs aren't the fucking problem.
>It's carbs from fruit, carbs from wheat, and carbs from 1200-1500 calories of alcohol on the daily that's the problem.

It looks like people are saying "too many carbs" causes diabetes, which is of course wrong. That's been the entire argument so far. People worrying about "a diet high in carbs" as if that hasn't traditionally been the diet least associated with diabetes. I won't fight you saying that 1200-1500 calories of alcohol (which is its own calorie source separate from carbohydrate) is bad, but what you're not getting is that eating "plenty of" whole grains and fruits does not contribute to diabetes despite containing carbohydrates, and if anything makes you less likely to become diabetic. Diabetes isn't a problem of eating too many carbs, it's a problem of insulin resistance. Some carb sources can contribute to insulin resistance, other carb improve insulin sensitivity. Other factors can also contribute to insulin resistance, such as excess body fat, which the guy has. If he manages to develop diabetes some day, it'd probably be from being overweight, not from eating whole wheat and fruits, which are otherwise known to be beneficial in preventing diabetes. And why lump those foods in with beer?

The genetic component of heart disease is very rare, but even with genetic abnormalities, it comes down to serum cholesterol numbers. Some people have a gene (familial hypocholesterolemia) that gives them less LDL recepters, and they're able to maintain low cholesterol pretty much regardless of what they eat, while other people have the opposite (familial hypercholesterolemia) that makes them much more susceptible to heart disease. These genes are relatively uncommon though, so most people with heart disease get it through a diet high in saturated fat, cholesterol, and refined foods. Experts say that if your total cholesterol is over 150mg/dl and your LDL over 70 or 80mg/dl, you're at risk of developing atherosclerotic plaques, which will form over a period of time as long as your blood cholesterol is at or above those atherogenic levels. For most people, the only way to achieve these healthy cholesterol levels without drugs is to eat a fairly low fat, plant-based diet rich in whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables. If you stray from those dietary principles and you don't have the hypocholesterolemia gene, heart disease is almost guaranteed to eventually develop and kill you. Diet is the deciding factor for the vast majority of people
