Blue states (cali, new york, etc.) can get away with this because all the budget goes not just into advertising, but strangling the MSM.

If every commercial, show and news source tells you NYC barbecue is the best, it is the best. It will be (((academically determined))) to be the best. Every pleb who doesn't even eat barbecue, and never will, will parrot "NYC barbecue is the best." It will be the best on Wikipedia, in the encyclopedias, so on and so forth. It truly won't matter that when you arrive they serve you three strips of bacon on a paper towel; anyone who even THINKS of bringing that up publicly will be shamed, kicked out of their jobs, thrown from their community and their kids will suffer mysterious accidents.

This is how it's always worked and always will.
