Companies selling tea bags almost always do so in a direct effort to maximize profit over flavor/'quality'. They will use what is effectively flavorless floor dust, or cheap leaf ground into particulates or shreds because it will much more readily infuse into a liquid due to having significantly more available surface area. The reason it becomes dark and bitter so quickly is because of this rapid infusion, bringing in a lot of caffeine and bitter notes such as those from tannins. This leads to a low quality, bland, non-aromatic cup of tea. As a result of buying this bad tea, many people resort to using milk, sugar/sugar substitutes, and so on in order to mask the flavor of their unpleasant and low-quality infusion. If you think about it, these people could have just saved time and money by buying good loose tea, but most will not because of perceived convenience.
